Q&A - Kate from Shoes, Sushi and Spare Change

It's been way too long since I did a Q&A with a fellow blogger, and there are so many lovely bloggers to mention. But this time it's the turn of Kate from across the pond in Australia, also a bargain-hunter like me. Check out her beauty must-haves, favourite Australian stores and first date fashion tips below...

Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Kate and I write the blog Shoes, Sushi and Spare Change to share my love of style with the world.

Why did you start blogging?
I began my blog about one year ago to develop my own personal style and help others find their own.

What inspires you?
I am a certified magazine junkie and love to get inspiration from Vogue, InStyle, Madison and (my personal fave) Shop ‘til You Drop. Street style photographs on other blogs are also a big influence, of course, and I love to get new ideas from fashion bloggers and stylish passers-by alike.

If you had to wear just one fashion designer's clothes for life, who would it be?
Being a tad of a tightwad shopper, I’m not often found in designer garb (okay, I never am). But I would definitely choose to wear Stella McCartney’s designs as they are so classic; I would never get tired of them. The other important factor for me is that Stella doesn’t use fur and offers vegan-leather pieces – so I would be able to wear shoes!

What are your top 3 high street stores and why?
My favourite Australian chain stores are Forever New for feminine and classy buys; Sportsgirl to add a little on-trend pizzazz and Witchery for top quality pieces (often at amazing sale prices).

What has been your biggest ever bargain?
That would have to be an Esprit sweater that I bought for $22.50 down from $80 – that’s nearly 75% off!

And what has been your biggest ever splurge?
I honestly haven’t spent more than $130 on a single item of clothing. That was an agent ninetynine faux-leather motorcycle jacket from General Pants Co. which goes with everything. I have worn it so many times and it still looks brand new.

What is your beauty routine?
Pretty basic. I cleanse and moisturise my face with gentle plant-based products only at night and then apply pure rosehip oil for my acne scars. In the morning my number one step is to apply a mineral sunscreen (I like Invisible Zinc’s ESP but there are others available). Then I just add a light foundation and under-eye concealer for my ever-present dark circles plus whatever other makeup I feel like wearing. Remember; drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet and protecting yourself from the sun are the best things you can do for your pretty face!

What do you collect?
Again, the magazines! But clothes and shoes are also much-collected.

Which celebrity would you love to dress and why?
Olivia Palermo, because she would make whatever I put together look good.

Which celebrity do you think has the best style?
I love Alexa Chung because she wears such unique ensembles and really has her own style. She’s a trend-setter rather than a trend-follower and not many people can manage that (especially not with the nonchalant aplomb that Alexa does).

What is your favourite trend of the moment?
I generally stay away from obvious trends (I like to wear my clothes season, after season, after season... well, you get the picture) although I am loving the explosion of leopard print lately. It will always be stylish.

How do you turn around a bad hair day?
Generally a high, slicked back ponytail is my best option, but I love to wear hats for covering oily roots while getting some added sun protection too.

What would you wear on a first date?
I think it’s important to keep things simple. Just wear something flattering for your body, appropriate to the event and that you feel comfortable in. If you have to keep adjusting anything it won’t help you look or feel relaxed. Personally, I would like to go with a little black shift dress (no chance of Napoli sauce stains) with dressy flats or a low, comfortable heel (depending on your height – and your date’s!) then add a few simple accessories that show your personality. Be Yourself.
