HAIR - Hot Tips From P&G Brand Ambassadors

The day before the Olympics kicked off last week, I was invited along for some pampering by London 2012 sponsors P&G. And even better, I got to bring my mum with me! I don't think my mum and I have ever had a day in London with just the two of us so it was a really nice treat. You may have seen the P&G campaign, Proud Sponsor of Mums and it's true... every mum deserves a medal.

We both had our hair done in the Wella salon, followed by an Olay facial and make-up application finished off with a quick slick of glossy Max Factor varnish for my nails. See my new-do above, and pics of my mum and I posing for the photo booth. I will never grow up, clearly!

I also had a chance to chat to some of the ambassadors for big-name P&G brands. First up, I chatted to Peter Lux, who has a fine head of hair of his own... I felt inferior!

Peter Lux has been working with Head & Shoulders for more than two years and his aim is to spread the word of hair and scalp care and debunk the myth that it's the boring side of the hair world. He explained to me a great reason for this: 'if you look at the catwalks, hair styles have become very minimal and more wearable, it's not so crazy any more, but there are a lot of defined partings going on. It almost accessorises the hair. Chanel painted a black line on it a couple of seasons ago and YSL did a really severe thing a year ago when they did a strong side parting that was very slick.' I hadn't thought of it like that but he's right. If you are going to show hair off in that way, you need to have great hair - you need to prepare!

Peter continued: 'We all talk about beautiful hair and everybody wants beautiful hair, but let's not forget where the hair comes from. You don't have to have dandruff to use Head & Shoulders. A lot of people, especially in London, might find that they have an itchy scalp for example. There are products from Head & Shoulders that are designed for that.'

I asked what people need to do differently when it comes to scalp and hair care for holidays. Peter told me that the priority should be not to burn the scalp. He says: 'Make sure you switch your parting around, go from a side parting one day to a centre parting the next day to avoid it.' But his biggest holiday top tip? 'Salt water can really take all the life out of the hair, it drains the colour out and can make it very dry', he says, 'but if you are concerned about that, one easy way to avoid salt water aggravating the hair so much is this... the hair works like a sponge; if you saturate the hair with fresh water before you go into salt water, that salt water cannot go into the hair so much. It's so logical. Just get your hair really wet, especially on the ends where the hair is driest, before going into the sea.'

With the olympics in mind, I also asked about chlorinated water. Those poor swimmers must have a tough task keeping their hair looking lovely. Peter says it's all about the shampoo and conditioner. Just use really good ones after being in the pool, it's that simple.

What should people do differently as they age, is another question I was keen to ask, especially as I'd taken my mum along with me. 'Hair changes as people age', Peter explained, 'grey hair is wiry and a lot stronger, so you need to moisturise the hair more to keep it nice and supple and shiny. Go easy on the styling tools, and also, those metal brushes should all go in the bin! They get so hot and when the hair is already naturally dry, like grey hair, it will dry the hair out even more and make it feel brittle and it might snap. Natural bristle brushes are the best thing to use as they don't overheat as much and they give more shine.'

And of course, I had to ask who his hair idols were? Cat Deeley came top of his list, 'that woman has got amazing hair, I love her hair' he enthused. But is it hard work or all natural I wondered? 'She's got naturally great hair and her hair is easy hair, never too fussy' says Peter. 'I always like quite natural hair like Kate Moss, Sienna Miller... I also like Emma Watson's hair (above right, shot for Harper's Bazaar), it's short, it's cool, she's pushed the boundaries a bit and she looks incredible'.

Next up, I grabbed a few minutes with the lovely Josh Wood who has been the Global Wella Professionals Colour ambassador since 2008.

The first question I had to ask a colourist was: is the dip-dye dead? After all, it's been done to death. Josh suggested that the new way to work this look is in a more natural way, what he called the 'surf-kissed look' and catwalk shows are a great place to look for new ways of using colour. 'The colour at Prada was interesting' he told me, 'but it wasn't dipping, it was blocking which is this idea that you can have more than one colour, vertical colour. Wella Professionals have just launched a new permanent hair colour called Illumina, and there are some really soft, pastel tones and really interesting pearlised and oyster-like tones.'

With people descending on London for the olympics from all corners of the globe I was keen to find out if Josh had any favourite trend-setters from particular countries. 'I've just been travelling a lot in China, and Beijing and Shanghai are starting to adopt a street culture like Tokyo has had for a long, long time. It's great because it's so experimental. It's wrong but it's right. I think in North American and Europe we're so studied and guarded about our hair, where there they use it as a fabric of experimentation, it's fun to see.'

It crossed my mind that athletes often having to scrape back their hair into sporty ponytails, I asked Josh what his twist would be on the classic ponytail. He said: 'If you look at designers like Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein, it's always a ponytail, but I think whether it's on the crown or very low, can give a very different look or feel. I do think what I've seen a lot of is a very, very low, and flat pony tail.'

Any tips for caring for the hair, I asked. 'I think if you're colouring your hair' Josh explained, 'you need to put in the same time and effort into caring for your hair as you do for colouring it. Certainly with my clients, what I ask them to do is always use a mask once a week, and generally I give them a mask called Color Save in the SP range which is specifically designed for hair colour, to lock the molecules in. But be site specific, so if you're going into the sun you need to use a product for that, or if you're going into chlorinated water then you need a product designed for that'.

And one for mum, what should a woman do as she gets older to make sure her hair colour works for her? Josh recommends: 'When someone becomes a slave to their colour, it's the wrong colour. If you feel that you need to be doing your roots every 3-4 weeks it's time for a change. Although it isn't the case for everyone, in general the more grey you get then the lighter you go the better it is. Always keep the hairline a little lighter against the skintone'.

PHOTOS - My Life in Instagram Pics, July 2012

July was the month I embraced pink! It was also the first time I wore jeans... in a VERY long time. I picked these pastel ones up for £20 from the River Island sale and the high-waisted styling fit me so much better than a lot of jeans do. I also bought a brand new neon pink lipstick from Barry M which I have had so many compliments on. Finally, I ordered a bright pink tote from Michael Kors as part of my partnership with Sarenza. Love it!

July was the month I went to Manchester for a girly weekend. We stayed at the Thistle in thecentre of Manchester and crammed loads into our stay. On Saturday we went to the Trafford Centre for a spot of shopping, lunch and a rather juvenile trip to Lego Discovery Land (we were the oldest there by two decades!) After some more shopping and and ice cream it was back to the hotel for a little spa visit before face masks and drinks in our room, a chines meal and a night in the tiles for cocktails. On Sunday we soothed our hangover with a sauna, swim and jacuzzi. Then it was a nice walk along the canal to a great bar we'd been recommended who were doing a BBQ lunch - yum. We popped to the Museum of Science and Industry for a little Steam Train ride (again, how old am I?) and then it was back into town for heart-shaped scones, jam, clotted cream and tea.

July was the month I saw Madonna in Hyde Park. I wwent along to celenbrate West London as part of the #iwasthere campaign run by Westfield Shopping Centres. It was an awesome show and it's easy to forget Madonna's age when she is doing such complex choreography and wearing such revealing outfits.

July was the month I helped break a world record (for the second time). Yes, I went back to Hastings and joined over 14,000 other people dressed as pirates. It was an awesome day and the busiest I have ever seen Hastings, The day was completed with an amazing Red Arrows display.

And this stuff happened too...

NEWS - Louise Redknapp is Wild About Beauty

Louise Redknapp is launching a new beauty brand in September called Wild About Beauty. It's developed in conjunction with international make-up artist Kim Jacob - the pair met over seven years ago on a photo-shoot for ‘Red’ magazine.

I didn't know this, but Louise Redknapp developed skin pigmentation after the birth of her son Charley. Kim's expert style of make-up application gave Louise a natural, fresh look - and added confidence - without heaps of heavy make-up. Following this, Kim became Louise’s personal make-up artist and friend.
This may be a first for Louise, but Kim has an in-depth knowledge of cosmetic chemistry and has already created cosmetic ranges for FCUK, BOOTS and Bayan SPA plus her own line of natural mother and baby skincare poroducts called Angelique.

Expect to see a range of multi-purpose cosmetics packed with naturally-active, soothing ingredients. Wild about Beauty also promises 'easy-to-apply formulations that give a professional finish leaving your complexion with a natural, glow and radiance'. Sounds good right?

I'm interested to see what's to come from this brand. Watch this space...

SHOES - Studded Slip-ons by Steve Madden

Cinderella had her glass slippers, Dorothy had her ruby slippers... me? I've got this pair of studded, silver, sparkling slippers from Steve Madden at Sarenza. Wow, that's enough 'S' repetition to make that sentence a fashionable tongue-twister.

I've seen loads of people wearing this style of slip-on shoe - they've definitely become a must-have, at least in London. I've seen studded ones, but, not one to shy away from a statement shoe, I decided to order these seriously bling-tastic shoes as part of my partnership with Sarenza. I wore them into the office with a plain black outfit accessorised with silver jewellery and got plenty of compliments.

This style has followed the pyjama trend that was so hot on the catwalk, but I won't be saving these for bedtime. Shoes like this need to be shown off, and these will definitely become my perfect party flats - for when I can't face heels.

They are also available in black if you don't want to stand out from the crowd quite as much as I do. Yours for £84.99, shop 'Studly' shoes by Steve Madden here.

*These shoes were a gift, but chosen by me.

SHOES - Neon Running Shoes for Women

Henry Holland tweeted a picture of his recently, and they've been popping up all over Instagram... neon running shoes are lust-worthy. Neon is not retro, it's 'now', and with many fashionable types turning their gym kits blindingly bright it's easy to get caught up in the trend. In the past I've always gone for black trainers - my current ones have gold and white detailing, but they are pretty subtle. Now though, I'm tempted to join the gym-trend-setters and go for something a little more eye-catching.

It could be that a bright new pair of kicks gives you the extra motivation to kick-start your fitness regime. Or at least, I'm going to try that tactic... They might not be my usual brand, but Reebok has some great neon pink and orange trainers right now over at Spartoo.

Is your gym kit bright or more subdued? How loud is too loud?

Why I chose West...

I've always lived West
When I first moved to London my postcode was SW12, and leafy Wandsworth Common was home. My local pub was The Hope which did an awesome fish finger sandwich. There were also some fabulous little coffee shops along the common. If anything it was quite 'yummy mummy' but nothing beats going to the Common on a Sunday and seeing all the ways that people use the park from exercising, to playing with the kids or relaxing with friends.

I, rather reluctantly, left the South West to go North West to NW1, moving into my own pad in Camden. For two years I've been conveniently located for some of the best nightlife and just a five-minute walk away from the gorgeous Regents Park. Everything's been on my doorstep (including the evidence of other people's wild night's out unfortunately) but it's been fun. I've definitely made the most of the live music too at Electric Ballroom, Koko, The Roundhouse and Proud Galleries.

In August I'm moving again, and this time home will be SW2. Brixton is cool, filled with amazing eateries and real characters. My new pad is right next to Brockwell Park which has a Lido and plays hosts to some great community events. The Ritzy cinema is a real gem too, along with a great gig venue, the Brixton Academy.

I've always worked West
After being made redundant I got a job working for Debenhams head office. The timing couldn't have been better and it put me on the doorstep of Oxford Street. Some people might have thought this a bad thing, but for a blogger it was a dream. I did all my shopping, press days and events post-work or on my lunch break. It was probably a blessing that I left just as Meatliquor opened up round the corner. There were so many options for eating, drinking and dancing.

Now, I work in Paddington. The cafes of Edgware Road remind me of holidays to Greece and Egypt with all the yummy grilled food smells. I'm a stone's throw from Hyde Park and have Marylebone and the canal, filled with fun, painted boats.

I've had great times at Westfield London
I've done Blogger tutorials, eaten amazing grub at Balans, gone on date nights with the boyfriend to the cinema and had some great shopping sprees. I even saw the Greatest Fashion Show on Earth there.
