REVIEW - Fusion Massage at Gina Conway Aveda Salon & Spa

I used to think that going for a massage was a luxury, a special treat for the mind and body. I've changed my mind since living and working in London though. Spending the best part of the day at a desk makes my body crave the relaxation and treatment you get from a proper massage.

Last week I headed over to the Gina Conway Aveda Salon & Spa on Westbourne Grove to try out their Fusion Massage. It's actually a really handy location for me working in Paddington, just a short walk away, and they are open until 9pm most weekdays. So carrying the stresses of my day I arrived at the salon which is a really stunning space - spacious and decorated with a mixture of modern and traditional. The hairdressing space is huge too, there are two more rooms than you can see when you walk in.

My therapist showed me to the spa space and treatment room which was cosy, dark and roomy. She started by asking me to get into a towel and pop my feet into the foot bath that was ready and waiting. As the hot water soaked away my troubles, I filled out a short questionnaire to determine my mood and skin type, specifically for that day - the idea being that the oils used during the massage are selected to suit me perfectly. From a shortlist of three scents I chose the citrus one with zingy orange. Of the other two one was quite traditionally floral and the other was quite medicinal.

With the scent chosen I got my feet out of their soak and my therapist used a scrub on them (much needed in my case I might add). I then got comfortable lying face down on the massage table. The massage started after 3 deep inhalations, whereby the scent was put close to my face so I could breathe it in. The masseuse spoke to me to check that her pressure suited me. Personally I like a fairly firm massage so I feel like my muscles have been properly loosened up. There's nothing worse than coming out of a treatment having not felt like you've had anything done at all.

My back and neck were where most of the massage was focused - that's where I need it because of too many hours in an office. I also thought the massage around my ankles and hands was good too. I think they can often be neglected but often benefit from some expert attention. She didn't use too much oil either which is good, so I didn't leave feeling all greasy.

Having, only a couple of weeks earlier, torn a big chunk of calf muscle I was sure to alert the masseuse and as I am still having physio I thought it best for her not to massage this area. She was very sensitive and careful with my injury and I felt completely at ease the whole time and not worried that she might accidentally knock it or forget about it.

After the massage I was left to relax and wake up a bit and then the masseuse returned with a glass of cucumber infused water (I need to do this at home, so refreshing!) and I was even offered some fruit on the way out.

The price of the massage I had is at least £75 so it's fairly indulgent, but I am definitely coming round to the idea that paying more does pay off. You could also try a 1/2 hour massage which starts at £48, drop some hints to a loved one! Whether you opt for this spa or another, I definitely think a regular massage should be on every office-worker's agenda. My last massages were when I was on holiday in Egypt in December. Both were good, but I'd left it far too long between sessions.

Next on my list to try is the Medi-Pedi, which is available at the Wimbledon branch of the spa. At 3/4 of an hour or an hour, this is an intensive treatment and I've discovered it just in time for summer. I bet most of us aren't too pleased with our feet at the moment, mine could do with lots of TLC.

CELEBRITIES - Armani at Haiti: Carnival in Cannes event

Celebrities were out in force this week to support the Haiti: Carnival in Cannes event and plenty donned Armani for the occasion. The man behind the label was there too, who do you think worked the brand best? I love the simple elegance of Armani gowns and some of the most stylish men across the world are partial to an Armani tux, for example George Clooney.

HAIR - eXtreme'n easy Hair Colour

Nice'n Easy are known for natural looking hair colour, but they've recently launched a more vibrant collection of shades under the eXtreme'n easy label. As a teen, I had my hair pretty much every colour you can imagine, from bright red to plum, and even red with blonde streaks. There's definitely been a return to brighter or bolder hair colour choices over the past few years so this new range gives customers a chance to try more exciting shades but with the great quality hair dye that Nice'n Easy is renowned for.

I went to a blogger event to launch these new ranges and had a chance to hear from a scientist behind the colours and also a hair dresser who had used the new colour on a model who joined us on the evening. The colour really was vibrant, striking but also not too flat. Her hair had a super-shiny finish and amazing tone, for a second I almost wanted to go red again myself.

The new shades are:

  • Deep Violet 3RV
  • Espresso Brown 4WN
  • Ruby Red 5RR
  • Vivid Violet 5RV
  • Cherry Red 6RR
  • Flame Red 7RR
  • Arctic Blonde - launching in June 2012

I did take away the Espresso Brown shade which I am looking forward to trying though. It's got a really nice, rich tone and should cover up those stray greys that are starting to creep in. I keep blaming stress but I think I need to face facts that I'm getting closer to thirty and I can't fight they greys forever.

Which colour would you go for? Here's some inspiration...

INTERVIEW - Emma of Style Sequel

In my Q&A series, I put questions to bloggers, fashionistas and boutique owners to get an insight into their style and shopping personas. In this latest post, Emma from Style Sequel is in the hot seat.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am the founder of www.stylesequel.com – a gorgeous, eclectic pre-owned designer fashion resale website. I have always loved beautiful clothes and have been an avid pre-owned shopper myself for as long as I can remember. Around five years ago I decided to turn my passion into a business when I started selling second hand designer clothing online.

Why did you open your shop?
Style Sequel was born in 2011 to fill a gap in the market for a truly specialist clothing reselling platform, with a high level of knowledge, care and service given to both sellers and buyers. Our blog covers everything from ‘hero product’ profiles to hints and tips on pre-owned fashion selling and buying.

What inspires you?
Our customers drive my desire to deliver a fabulous service – I love to talk to as many of them personally as I can and I love that relationship. I am also really inspired by the amazing pieces we are given to sell – from rare Tom Ford for Gucci to current season Stella McCartney – I still get excited every time we get a new delivery in.

If you had to wear just one fashion designer's clothes for life, who would it be?
I love clothes too much to pick just one – I could never limit myself. I love individual pieces rather than labels. Some of my all-time favourites? My vintage Chanel jacket boucle jacket, my black lace Comme Des Garcons skirt, my Osman wool dress and my vintage silver Susan Small shift.

What are your top 3 high street stores and why?
Topshop for its Unique, Boutique and Emerge ranges; COS for white shirts – they always have something a bit quirky - and River Island for great prints.

What has been your biggest ever bargain?
My crystal studded 1980s Sonia Rykiel jumper – I paid £7 for it in a charity shop about 8 years ago and it is still one of my most treasured pieces.

And what has been your biggest ever splurge?
The vintage Chanel jacket I mentioned above – it cost a small fortune but is an absolute heirloom piece. It actually hangs on my bedroom wall – it is that gorgeous. We sell such amazing things through Style Sequel that it is always very tempting but I am very good at being strong. My favourite thing at the moment is this amazing Balenciaga jacket.

What is your beauty routine?
I try to keep it simple. I love Chanel Sublimage gel cleanser (a little goes a very long way so a tube lasts for ever) and Palmer’s Cocoa Butter is still the best body cream ever. I try not to wear much make up when I can get away with it – I think letting your skin ‘breath’ is a good thing.

What do you collect?
Apart from clothes I actually have quite a lot of weird monkeys and apes dotted around the house – I don’t collect them as such but I have to admit to being a little primate obsessed (I did Zoology at university). I’d really, really love to collect high quality taxidermy.  I have one fabulous piece so far but it is very hard (and expensive) to get the really good stuff.

Which celebrity would you love to dress and why?
I am not really interested in celebrity but in terms of someone I think would be amazing to work with I’d have to go for Tilda Swinton. She just has such grace and there is something almost other wordly about her.

Which celebrity do you think has the best style?
I really like women who dress with a real masculine/feminine feel. Evan Rachel Wood wears some really interesting stuff and I love Yasmin Sewell too – no-one can rock boyfriend jeans and heels like her.

What is your favourite trend of the moment?
I am quite surprised by how much I like a lot of the pastels that are around at the moment as I’ve always been drawn to much stronger colours. I do in general prefer autumn clothes as I love heavy fabrics and tailoring.

How do you turn around a bad hair day?
I am quite lucky – I have an amazing hairdresser and I think a good hair cut makes sure you don’t have too many bad hair days. But when I do I usually reach for the straighteners – sometimes it works, sometimes not

What would you wear on a first date?
Depends where we were going really. For a quick drink I’d wear jeans and great heels, for dinner a killer dress and red lipstick.

SHOES - Flatforms for Puddle Dodging

I am fed up with this weather. The biggest reason is that I can't wear sandals because it means wet and soggy toes. But there is one style of shoe which is big news this season, and it might just hold the answer to the problem. Flatforms can be pretty comfortable, are totally on trend, but keep your feet elevated just enough above the puddles to keep those toes slightly drier. Obviously, if it's tipping it down then there's still no solution on the sandal front, but it's worth a try right?

My latest Sarenza hot pick was these printed flatforms from Mellow Yellow. I remember first seeing the brand Mellow Yellow on a blogger trip to Paris and the label has plenty of choice for any shoe-lover (A.K.A me). They always have a nod to the latest shoes trends, but keep a few classics in there too.

Lupiac, £109 (these are the ones I picked)

BRAND - Nelly Hits the UK

No it's not the St. Louis rapper with gold teeth (that I had a bit of a crush on I have to admit). It's been called Scandinavia's answer to ASOS, and when I went along to take a peek at some of the clothes and shoes from fashion retailer Nelly, and the other brands they stock, what I was most impressed with was the price. There are lots of fabulous clothes but lots at the lower end of the price scale too, which is just what we need in the current climate.

Highlights included amazing studded shoes in both flat and heeled styles, fabulous sheer shirts and dresses and an array of colourful prints and patterns. The great thing is that with a multitude of brands in their stable, it doesn't matter what your personal style signature is, there's likely to be something that you are drawn to. They also offer menswear and maternity ranges

Nelly already produce a magazine in Sweden which is one of the largest in the country, over 100,000 copies a season. Plus, over 1.4 million people visit their website each month. With success like that already under their belt, it's only a matter of time before Nelly becomes a household name in the UK too. Take a look and let me know what you think.

I'm looking forward to another event with the Nelly team next week to learn more about the brand and what they've got to offer. Watch this space.

SHOES - Stripes Are Nice

Introducing my new wedges from LK Bennett at Sarenza. I picked these out as part of my partnership with Sarenza and I was hoping to do an outfit post showing me wearing them, but the weather has been less than accommodating hasn't it? I wanted a pair of nude wedges but when I saw the striped heels on these beauties I couldn't resist, so this way I get the best of both worlds - the leg-lengthening trick and summery, bright colours. It remains to be seen how comfortable they are, but I've clearly been inspired by them with my recent Instagram pics...
