CELEBRITY – Jameela Jamil’s Festival Tips

Jameela Jamil is a festival regular and one to watch on the fashion front too. Here she reveals some of her top festival tips, fashion and beauty essentials. I spotted her at Lovebox as she introduced acts on the main stage on the Saturday. She looked the part wearing a military-inspired outfit and her make-up was flawless... unlike mine (although I had been rained on for a number of hours).

This weekend I had a chance to pop down the the Vintage festival at Southbank by Wayne Hemingway. It was a completely different vibe to when it was held outside last year at Goodwood, and actually one of the best bits was the vintage market and stalls outside which were free for anyone to browse.

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post to find out how to WIN A PAIR OF RAY BANS!

Back to Jameela though, here is a Q&A with her about festivals, fashion and music...

Which festivals are you going to this year?
So far it’s been Isle of Wight, Hard Rock Calling, Wireless Lovebox, Secret Garden Party, V Festival, and T4 on the Beach... I’m trying to pack as much festival in as possible before I get too old for a portaloo!

Which act would you most like to see at a festival?
Beyonce. and I bloody missed her at Glastonbury... and T in the Park, and Oxygen, I’m furious. but I have seen Stevie Wonder live, so I shan’t complain too much...

What is your funniest festival memory?
It wasn’t at all funny at the time, but looking back, I got trapped in a portaloo for an hour once. The door got stuck, and Prodigy were playing so nobody could hear me screaming. never ever piss during Prodigy... I’m scarred for life.

What are your festival essentials?
Ray Bans – Always Ray Bans. Baby wipes, I always keep a bottle of glaceau vitaminwater in my bag- it tastes great and keeps me hydrated. Other things are definitely loo roll and money for chips.

Are there any songs that you associate with summer / summer festivals?
I think the Kings of Leon  always get me in the festival mood... The Bucket is my summer song. and I’m yours by Jason Mraz...

Do you have any pre festival rituals?
Raiding our wardrobes for clothes we can never get away with in London to our summer soundtracks... bring on the animal hats, feather headdresses and more make up than Jodie Harsh... why not?

Which beauty products do you have to keep to hand?
Concealer Boi-ing by Benefit, Maybelline falsies mascara, Nars red lipstick and Bobbi Brown- golden light bronzer...they are my festival face uniform.

What are your top festival outfits?
I keep it traditional and comfortable, vintage men’s leather boots, pretty dress and a statement hat, and the quirkier the jewellery, the better...

Have you been to any festivals abroad before and what happened?
Not yet, I’m heading to Coachella next year though.

Do you have any styling tips for your fans?
A good hat will save you at a festival, it protects you from the sun, the rain and the flying bottles of wee that get chucked into the crowd, and lets you maintain some sort of dignity by keeping you looking somewhat chic...

What’s the best thing you’ve ever found at a festival?
A rotisserie. I’m so bloody sick of the amount of cous cous stands at festivals these days... bring on the chAcken...

What are your key pieces to wear this summer?
Felder Felder leather wrist cuffs, Urban Outfitters have awesome Native American head dresses, that teamed with a simple outfit, are killer, and floaty white dresses from H&M.

Lovebox festival

What is the biggest festival no-no?
All-in-ones. I learned the hard way, playsuit + portaloo = disaster....

At festivals you will mainly find me..?
Looking for chicken. or in the smaller tents watching the small un heard of bands, that’s usually the best stuff you’ll hear at festivals...

Who are your summer style icons?
I think Florence Welch looks awesome always, and Erin Wasson defines summer chic.

Name three of your essential summer tunes?
Cee-lo Green- its ok, Katy B - Katy on a mission, Three little Birds- Bob Marley.

How would you describe your style?
Comfortable retro glamour. life’s too short for the natural look!

SHOES – Summer, Sunshine and Sandals

It took a while, but this weekend the sun finally made an appearance for more than a couple of hours. As part of my current project with Sarenza I’ve been trialling different shoes each month and I’ve been waiting for some sunshine to show off my latest sandals. Both pairs I chose are by Georgia Rose of which there is a huge range available on the Sarenza UK website.

Going for gold
I have a sizeable collection of gold jewellery at the moment so I thought I should definitely have a pair of gold sandals to wear with it all. This pair by Georgia Rose have got a sturdy zip-up fastening at the back of the shoe and no toe post – great if you find them uncomfortable. The dress I’m wearing with them in the picture above is from Rare, the jacket was a sample sale bargain that I’ve worn to death. The bag was also from Sarenza, it’s by a brand called Pieces and it’s got a real vintage feel to it.

IMG_3474 IMG_3472

Pretty in pewter
I wanted a pair that would go with most outfits, but didn’t just want black, so these Georgia Rose metallic sandals caught my eye. They are super comfy, and make you feel nice and secure with a toe post, straps and neat little buckle at the back of the shoe. The do jingle and jangle a little bit as you walk so aren’t the best pair if you’re planning on sneaking up on someone unannounced. I don't mind it though. They are also available in gold and if you get there quick they're in the sale online.

What sandals are you wearing this summer?

BEAUTY - The Advert Airbrushing Debate Continues

So we are taking a stand against unrealistic images of women and celebrities in our advertising. I for one agree that we need to tone things down. Airbrushing on the scale of those shown in the video above makes women appear flawless, but often they even look unreal. Once you start taking out the natural shadows of the face and those little lines that occur through expression you don't really have a human any more. I remember a Marie Claire cover with Courtney Cox on and they had removed every trace of imperfection around her mouth and in the end her mouth looked like it had just just been plonked onto a beige circle. We want to see character in a face and airbrushing removes this.

Now I do appreciate the other side of the argument too. I like the pictures in my magazine to be aspirational and I don't mind thinking, "wow, she looks good in this ad". But a healthy dose of realism would benefit us all. Otherwise, we'll probably see disclaimers on beauty adverts, just like the mascara caveats we now have on ads.

Debenhams also did a big campaign around swimwear airbrushing where they showed before and after shots. You can vote on the issue at the Debenhams blog.

Where do you stand on the debate? Should beauty ads be banned if they over-do the airbrushing and retouching?

INTERVIEW - Soraya of Soraya Amaia Beachwear

If you've got a summer holiday planned then you'll be needing a fabulous bikini right? My latest Q&A post is with Soraya Amaia whose stylish Brazilian swimwear collection is worth a look. With all the horrid weather we've been having here in London things can only get better. That's my optimistic thought anyway.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I started off with a background in economics and finance which allowed me to travel round the world, but my creative side felt something was lacking. When I was working out in Brazil, I decided that I would start up my own Brazilian swimwear label, Soraya Amaia Beachwear.

What inspires you?
Mainly travelling and the countries I visit. Brazil is the inspiration behind Soraya Amaia Beachwear. The rainforest, the amazon, the waterfalls in Iguassu, the wildlife in Pantanal, the Rio Carnival, tropical beaches are all breath-taking, however, having spent time in Brazil, I found the most wonderful aspect is the intensity with which Brazilians live life. Their music, their warmth and their tenacity is truly remarkable.

If you had to wear just one fashion designer's clothes for life, who would it be?
That is a very tough question for someone who wears a mix-match of high street, vintage to boutique and high-end luxury (budget permitting). I love colour and playful, elegant yet functional designs from Daniella Issa Helayel’s. It’s the same approach I have to designing.

What are your top 3 high street stores and why?
Topshop, Karen Millen and Ted Baker…I always find something that I love for all occasions and at affordable prices.

What has been your biggest ever bargain?
A Valentino dress at bargain 90% discount.

And what has been your biggest ever splurge?
A jump suit from a luxury boutique in Athens…we only live once!

What is your beauty routine?
Trying to get a good night’s sleep and adding a touch of Rosa Mosqueta oil when my skin gets dry around the eyes.

What do you collect?
Bags, bags, bags. I can’t get enough of them.

Which celebrity would you love to dress and why?
Eva Mendes is gorgeous and curvy and would love to see her wearing some of my designs!

Which celebrity do you think has the best style?
Brigitte Bardot…timeless.

What is your favourite trend of the moment?
Bold colours – they brighten up my day.

How do you turn around a bad hair day?
I have so many bad hair days…thank goodness GHDs were invented.

What would you wear on a first date?
Depends on the date…drink or dinner…as long as your hair and make-up are done coupled with a pair of heels, I think you’re good to go with almost anything!

I hope you enjoyed the Q&A. Soraya Amaia Beachwear is stocked online and at Exotica Brazil, 15 Gloucester Arcade, 128 Gloucester Road, London SW7 4SF, London.

CELEBRITY - Ashlee, Kourtney and Co... Get the Look

I think Ashlee Simpson and lia sophia's Creative Director Elena Kiam and Red Carpet Collection Designer, Dani Stahl all look fab in a pic from a Lia Sophia launch party. Steal their style with these dress picks below...

From left to right we've got animal print like Ashlee with this zip back dress from Miss Selfridge. Next up I've selected a hot pink number to steal the look of Elena Kiam, you can this Phase Eight dress from Debenhams. Then lastly I love the little black dress with capped sleeves from Warehouse (again available at debenhams).

Another celeb was spotted at the event was Kourtney Kardashian. Kourtney's dip hem dress is totally on trend and you can steal her look at Miss Selfridge. Belted to show off your waist with a hemline that drops lower at the back than the front, this dress is a bargain at under £40. Simply team with high heels for a great Friday night outfit.

Animal print dip back dress - £39

I recently tried another dip hemmed dress (or mullet dress) at Miss Selfridge in Selfridges. I fell in love with the style but the colour just wasn't really suited to my skintone which was a real shame.

What was the latest dress you bought?

5 OF THE BEST - Dresses Under £20 from Prodigy Red

Yep, you read it right. I've found 5 fab dresses under £20 from Prodigy Red. Some of these definitely have an air of  Middleton chic about them but at these prices it's easy to try the look out on a budget. We can't all afford to regularly shop in the same stores as our new Duchess Kate now can we? My favourites are the top two belted styles as I just know they're much more flattering for my figure. Which do you like best?

Shop the latest styles from Prodigy Red

A snazzy print that reminds me of my favourite ice lolly from my childhood - the Zap. Remember it?

Love this dress. Flared and flattering with contrasting coloured trim.
Bodycon with some ruching to hide any minor lumps and bumps. Perfect with tights and heels.
A rather unforgiving cut and colour, but Kate and her athletic figure could pull it off.
A lovely lace number, a bit longer in length to hide those thighs which no doubt haven't seen the sun this summer... because there hasn't been any!

TV - Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model

So who has been watching Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model? I have to admit I like the new format where we are seeing the selecting process before the girls even get to the house. It sets it apart from the American version and we get to see a bit more of what it really takes to be a model - pretty isn't enough! So many of the girls think it's just about walking in, being discovered and being catapulted to fame but, as with any job, to be successful takes hard work.

The judges can sometimes be pretty harsh, but at other times they are quite warm and encouraging. I guess they just tend to feel strongly about finding the right girl for the prize - which is massive this year I might add...

The winner will get:

  • A contract with Models One
  • Company magazine 6 page spread and cover
  • Luxury holiday for 2 courtesy of BA
  • New Peugeot
  • Cosmetics campaign
  • £50,000 high street fashion campaign
Back before the launch I sent an intern who was working with me over at Debenhams along to the preview of the show. You can read her post over on the Debenhams blog with more info on what the judges are after this year.

I love Grace's style below, what do you reckon?

MAKE-UP - MeMeMe Cosmetics

MeMeMe Cosmetics invited me along to a preview of some of their new ranges at the Hempel Hotel recently and I was impressed with what I saw. The whole range has been rebranded and the packaging is really nice. There are some hot products coming up too. I've since had a chance to try out some of the products so I thought I'd run through a few of my favourites. Not all of them are available now but they will be soon so keep your eyes peeled.

Me Me Me cosmetics event

1. Seventh Heaven enriched moisturising facebase

I am a fairly recent convert to primers, but this one is by far the best I've tried and that's mainly down to the texture and smell. The pot is totally luxurious and so is the rich formula of the cream which goes on thick and melts into the skin. Best of all though, slathering this on in the morning is a wake-up call as its scented with fresh smelling orange. It gives skin a smooth finish and provides a good base for applying make-up. Seventh Heaven is available now in Superdrug.

Me Me Me cosmetics event

2. Shimmer stack

The range has been benchmarked against much higher-priced cosmetic brands and it definitely shows. The shimmer stacks are great because you can sweep a large brush over the palette for a bronzed or peachy glow (depending on the colour you go for) but you can also just pick out the white section to use as a highlighter - which means less items to cart around in your make-up bag. Shimmer stacks are available now in Superdrug.

3. Satin Lip Cream - £8.50

The lipsticks are great and so incredibly moisturising. The lips feel hydrated while you're wearing it although beware how soft they are - mine got a bit warm in my bag and I nearly snapped a big chunk off. Another stand-out point is that the lipsticks are vanilla fragranced. It's quite a nice change. There's a good mix of colours so I'll definitely be back for more. Satin lip cream is available now.

Me Me Me cosmetics event

4. Eye shadow trio

These colours turned out to be so apt for me as I recently got a new blue and yellow dress and another dress which almost perfectly matched the teal colour. The shadow goes on well and blends with other colours easily if that's how you choose to wear it. Again, having the 3-in-one is handy because it saves space. Trios are available now.

5. Nail polishes

I wasn't so keen on the nail colours available at present but hopefully there'll be more coming soon that I like. The actual polish comes in a bottle with a wide brush designed to make it easier to paint each nail although I don't know if I am entirely convinced. Let me know if you've found a great colour...

Plus... check out the lip gloss with a light-up lid and mirror for when you're out on the tiles.

STYLE - Jacques Townhouse Sneak Peek

I was invited along to take a look at the Jacques Townhouse in London on its opening afternoon and I fell in love with the House and the people. The lovely gent on the front desk was perfectly in character and showering me with compliments (always welcome) and I was then escorted to the bar by a lovely young man (again, always welcome). On getting a nice cold Orchard fruits Jacques - that's peach and pear flavour deliciousness if you don't know - I headed off to get my hair done and then toured the house. Fellow blogger and talented jewellery maker/stylist Frankie Murray was on hand in the wardrobe room to prepare me for my close-up with a noted photographer... and here it is - what do you think?

Some people headed straight in for the skimpy stuff, like stage outfits of ex-Sugababe Keisha, but I went more for a Miss Marple look. Granny chic for the win! It's all a bit of good fun and you can see lots more dressed-up lovelies over at the Jacques Facebook page. Obviously the fashion and beauty stuff was amazing, but I got slightly distracted by how awesome the locatuion Chandos House was - definitely my dream home.

Here are some more of the pics I took while wandering around...

If you love the location as much as I do, then check out my blog post on Chandos House.

And, If you're a fruit cider fan then I definitely recommend the Orchard Fruits flavour of Jacques. Everyone at the opening party later in the evening seemed to be drinking it with heaps of ice. The Lady of the House Keisha is embarking on her first solo album since leaving the Sugababes and we were treated to a few exclusive tracks from the new record. I was really impressed with her voice, at least one of the new tracks sounded like a hit and best of all was her 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' cover with Beyonce's 'Girls' sandwiched in the middle of it. Very cool indeed.

She looked amazing in white, high-waisted shorts and statement jewellery. The pics I took are terrible so will try and borrow some from somone else. In the meantime, here she is in a recent shot looking rather lovely...

SHOES - Court in the act

I'm a bit back-logged with my Sarenza shoe posts lately but I just got a delivery so you'll be reading more about my top shoe picks in the near future. My recent order had a theme, I chose court shoes. My working shoe wardrobe needed a little bit of an update so the court style was ideal, plus I have to admit I was inspired by Kate Middleton and her LK Bennett nude shoes worn all over Canada. If it's a trend fit for royalty then why not little old me...

Court shoe 1: NOË Valena from Sarenza - £76.50

I wore them to the office this week. A colleague complimented me on the colour, the dark red is quite unusual and makes a welcome change from black. They are great for work as the heel is pretty low so I can last all day in them - hurrah! Noë shoes have an awesome selection of similar heels and best of all the range of colours they come in is massive. If you like to be matchy-matchy or have a penchant for colour-blocking you should definitely take a look.

Court shoe 2: BUFFALO klist patent from Sarenza - £63.75

I decided to throw these on for my not-so-dressed-down Friday. The heel on these is slightly higher than the last pair but they're still pretty comfy. I wouldn't wear them en-route to work but can easily last the day once I'm there. These were my Kate Middleton inspired heels and I'll be wearing them and hoping that they make my legs look longer (although the perspective of the photo above doesn't show that).

A fab offer

If you like these shoes (or shoes generally) then Sarenza have some fab offers. Until 1 August, Sarenza is running 8 crazy days with up to 60% off and free delivery on thousands of styles. Plus there's a further 20% off selected brands including Clarks, Crocs, Geox, Shape Ups, Georgia Rose, Valensi, Carvela, Camper, Bisgard. Visit Sarenza now to take advantage of the deals.

Coming soon... posts on my Jeffery Campbell heels and Georgia Rose sandals. I'm in shoe heaven!

*Disclaimer: I chose these shoes but was not asked to pay for them.

MOST WANTED - Blue Closet Stripe Dress

Finally, I've found a 'Most Wanted' that I can actually afford! I think this blue striped dress from Fashion Union is ruddy gorgeous. The mix of horizontal and vertical stripes with rough edges is so pretty and the sheen of the fabric gives it a dressy edge. Easy to wear everyday or able to be dressed up to if you were off to a wedding perhaps. I reckon I'd team it with some towering wedges, a cropped jacket and sunnies just like the one the model is wearing in the pics.

VIDEO - Daisy Lowe Answers my Beauty Questions

Remember the launch for the Braun Dual Epilator that I went to recently (read about it here)? Well Daisy Lowe who hosted the event was lovely enough to answer a few of my beauty questions in the video above. If you want to find out what she packs for travelling on a plane, what her fave make-up must-have is and what tips she's picked up from modelling shoots then watch away.

Daisy has hit the healines over the last couple of weeks after  reportedly being asked to pose for Playboy magazine and all I can say is, you don't get that cover without having fabulous legs (among other things). According to the MTV website, Daisy says of posing nude: "It was quite freeing, being able to be naked for a week… The only reason I ever 'do' sexy is because I like to encourage women to feel sexy about themselves." What's sexiest about Daisy is that she's actually a bit of a natural beauty. She isn't always caked in make-up, she just knows how to look effortlessly pretty and stylish.

If you want to know more about the epilator then check out Frankie's review of the epilator or my review of an earlier epilator model. Plus, I noticed that Braun have a promo feature in Grazia this week and I saw myself in the picture! Although in typical aloof fashion I am not looking towards the camera taking the pictures but down at my own camera. A blogger till the end right!

CELEBRITY - Beyonce Wears Agent Provocateur in New Video

Beyonce is definitely showing off that famous body in her latest video for 'Best Thing I Never Had'. The video starts with Beyonce wearing nothing but lingerie in a scene set before a wedding.

Want to steal her style? The fabulous white Penelope basque is from Agent Provocateur's bridal collection and is priced at £325. It's by no means the cheapest option but it is damn amazing! If you're not in the market for bridal lingerie then panic not, it's also available in black.

Now we just need the figure to match. Somehow I don't think dancing along to Beyonce tracks on 'Just Dance' is going to do it, but it's a start at least.

SHOPPING - On My July Wishlist

I wasn't first in line for the iPad, but then I've never been huge on Apple products. It makes new launches that aim to rival them really interesting for me. On 15 July, the HP Touchpad went on sale. The new tablet costs £399 for a WiFi 16gb version or £479 for the WiFi32gb tablet. The touchpad is said to make switching between apps seamless without losing your place, there's a Beats Audio sound system and full Flash support too. With the new WebOS launching at the same time there are some great partners already on board including The Guardian, LastFM, Warner Bros and Sky News. I'm intrigued to see what the pick-up is... and yes, I want one!

With this horrid weather we've been having, I've been looking back at designer AW11 collections and dreaming of wearing them now. One such designer is Eun Jeong whose coats with clever cuts and striking details make it on to my wishlist. I also love those maxi skirts that make a floor-sweeping statement. If summer is undecided about ever making its appearance then at least we've got new Autumn fashion to look forward to.

I was once an earring junkie. I had hundreds of pairs and couldn't leave the house withoutn them. Now, my collection is a little more modest and I'm quite partial to a pair of simple studs. These studs from Orit, designed by Efrat, come in silver with 38 diamonds. We all like diamonds right? At £270 though they're a little out of my budget right now. I do love the hand-made look to them though.

The sheer number of lingerie brands out there astonishes me. It's a neverending list of brands but now and then something stands out. I saw Miss Mandalay at a press day a while back and loved the styles. It's really feminine and not just the same as what you've already seen elsewhere. That said, it's still pretty mainstream in it style which makes it easy to wear. I love the ruffles on the Gigi set pictured - definitely a set for showing off.

I don't think I even need a reason for these being on my shopping list, I just blooming love them. I love the shape and I love the shimmer. I'm also quite partial to the discount - £965 reduced to £289. They may not be the most conventional of bridal shoes, but I reckon that's what they'd be great for, plus after spending out on them you'd definitely wear them again and again.

CELEBRITY - Abbey Clancy's Post-Baby Body

Being a model your body is your job, but I was still in awe of Abbey Clancy's post baby body. These pictures were taken around 3 months after she gave birth!  She's modelling Beautiful Bottoms lingerie - aptly named I guess! The lingerie collection itself is very pretty and worth a look, especially as there is a sale on right now. Get in there quick if you like something.

NEWS - Fabulous Magazine Moves to Saturday's Sun

I'm not going to try and go too much into the News of the World scandal, but there's no doubt the worrying extent of the hacking allegations are shocking and will hit the world of journalism hard. I'm certain that other papers are sitting scared at the moment praying their own indiscretions are not revealed. Considering the News of the World took it upon themselves to break stories of scandal it's quite ironic that we are now hearing all about theirs. I really hope that it means we'll end up with a better quality of newspaper moving forward, while still retaining free speech.

After the news broke I had a bad dream about having gone to the Fabulous magazine blogger event recently and in my dream readers boycotted my blog because of my involvement. Funny how issues like this manage to crop up in dreams isn't it? I can't say as I've ever been a fan of that sort of newspaper really but the readership is pretty staggering - surely The Sun will also take a dive due to all the controversy?

Anyway, I thought I'd mention that Fabulous Magazine is staying and I have to admit I'm relieved for those who work on the magazine if this means they get to keep their jobs. Having met and dealt with quite a few people from the magazine over the past few months I've had nothing but good experiences with them, they're a lovely bunch.

I'd love to hear your thoughts though. Has the Sun's reputation fallen by association? Will you still flick through Fabulous Magazine if there's one lying about? Feel free to share your thoughts in a comment below.

BEAUTY – Lash Perfect Lash Bar Review

I’m always grateful to find a new hair or beauty salon on work’s doorstep. It makes those lunchtime or post-work appointments so easy to fit in to my daily routine. That’s why I jumped at the chance to go and try out the Lash Perfect Lash Bar just off Carnaby Street. It’s not just lashes they do, but lashes, brows and make-up as well as selling all the essentials for that specialist beauty area.

I went in to give the corner flick semi-permanent lashes a try. Having tried lash extensions once before I was very impressed with the effect and was looking to give them another go soon anyway.

Lash Perfect Lash Bar corners

The therapist gave me the C-curl lashes which have a strong curl which really opens up the eyes. The process takes a little while but isn’t uncomfortable at all. You lie back and just let someone with a very steady hand set to work on beautifying you. There’s a consultation before anything is started too to make sure you’re given the right type of lashes that will give the effect you are looking for. I wanted something that was noticeable (but not from right across the room).

The salon itself is deceptively large with rooms downstairs including a lovely VIP room and larger training room. The girls can also apply strip lases and make-up in the shop area upstairs so it's great for a night out or if you're heading to a city festival like Lovebox this weekend. It all looks lovely and shiny and new and the staff are all extremely helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The location is very handy for anyone who works cantrally or loves to hit Topshop in Oxford Circus on a regular basis.

The strip lashes they sell are great, especially the amazing paper lashes from Paperself. I was lucky enough to get some in my goodie bag – I’ll be trying those out soon. Although they look so delicate I’m worried I will tear them in half before I even manage to attached them. You can also buy them online at the Lash Perfect website so it doesn't matter if you don't live in London.

If you are interested in trying semi-permanent lashes I cannot stress how imporant it is to go to someone well trained and experienced. That doesn't mean you can't get a good deal though. For a limited time Perfect Lash are offering a full set of lash extensions for £80  instead of £150. I’ve only got the corners of my lashes done and people have already commented on how good they look, so imagine how amazing a full set would be! I’ll definitely be going back for more lash and brow action soon.
