The holiday started bright and early on Monday morning, leaving the house at 5.30am in fact. The usual airport protocol all went without a hitch and I treated myself to eggs Benedict before the flight. My only hiccup was that I ripped my dress on the plane, which I saw as a very good excuse to buy more clothes while in New York - almost a sign wouldn't you agree?
We arrived at apartment close to 86th and York Avenue in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The neighbourhood was quiet but only a few blocks from the metro and a couple more to Central Park. We started by wandering along to the metro and getting our week long metro passes which are really cheap (always good), then we headed to Central Park for a drink and a rest in the glorious sunshine. We sneaked a peek at kids playing baseball in the ball park areas - we had planned to go and see the Yankees later in the week and I definitely needed to get my head round all the rules.
In the evening we headed to East Village to explore and find somewhere to eat, we passed a lot of Sushi places which New York has in abundance but settled on something meaty - I had a BBQ brisket of beef which was a massive portion as you can imagine. We also shared a jug of beer, and then slept well that night.
Owing to excitement and the time difference we were up early and out before 9am, we'd eaten bagels for brekkie and got the the Metropolitan Museum of Art as it opened. I loved the building as much as the items it displayed. Then it was across Central Park to the Museum of Natural History. We stopped en-route for a drink and to watch baseball teams practice at one of the baseball fields on the great Lawn and again the sun was shining, can't believe how lucky we were with the weather.
We were also lucky with the American Museum of Natural History in the apartment there were a couple of vouchers left by previous visitors and one was free entry for two to the museum. We wandered exploring the exhibits and also did the Big Bang Theatre space show which was the perfect way to rest our feet and become absorbed in Whoopi Goldberg's voice as she explained the compexitites of the cosmos.
Then it was time for lunch and we fancied Mexican. We headed to Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side for lunch at a little Mexican place called Cafe Frida. I didn't stuff myself and went for empanadas which were really tasty. The boyf opted for tacos which gave me a little bit of food envy.
Then it was down to the Rockefeller Centre for a nose and some shopping on 5th Avenue. I bought a sheer skirt in Urban Outfitters which just happened to be the item top of my shopping list, it's got a fab lace trim too so will be great for layering under or over other things. We wandered down down to the Empire State building and then back up to Macy's which was pretty manic at that time in the afternoon.
We headed back to the apartment home via the supermarket and soon realised food is expensive in NY. Rather than eating breakfast out every day we figured we'd get some supplies in to make our own but there isn't much of a difference in price! After such a long day on our feet we stayed local for dinner eating at a Pan Asian restaurant that also did cheap Mojitos... yum, yum. But there's always more to see...
I'm diarising my trip here so if you aren't interested in my New York trip then just pop back in a few days when normal content will resume.
