HAIR - Paul Labrecque Hair Products

Paul Labrecque is a Hair Stylist with two New York salons. His star studded clientele includes the likes of: Renee Zellweger, Reese Witherspoon, Hilary Swank, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Helen Mirren, Naomi Watts, Sting and Trudie Styler to name a few. This list in itself qualifies him as an expert in my eyes. He also has a range of hair products to help us achieve some of the great looks he styles, on our own hair.

The A-List Hair Stylist from New York recently added two new products to his luxury haircare line.
Daily Finish Matte Pomade
Used to sculpt, shape and add texture to modern haircuts, it provides a matte finish to your style. The no-flake pomade dries neither hard nor greasy and is perfect for sexy short cuts and that casual relaxed look -£20.00

Repair Condition Restorative Protein Mask
The new protein rich deep conditioning mask is fortified with natural nut oils and lemongrass designed to reverse damage caused by excessive blow drying, flat irons and heat styling. Leave in 3-5 minutes for a daily treatment or up to 20 with heat for a more intense conditioning. Pure lemongrass oil deeply penetrates the hair’s damaged cuticle to rebuild and replenish and natural oils leave hair silky soft, tangle free and more manageable - £24.00

These products are available in the UK at Selfridges and www.beautyexpert.co.uk

Paul's Tips for Controlling frizz

We all suffer occasionally, from the dreaded frizzy hair. For a quick cheat, a flat iron and a silicone product such as Frizzies or Paul Labrecque Color Finish will take away frizz for the moment - fast and quick. Longer term, we would try to heal what is there and not create any more frizz. This is a double-edged sword for if you use a flat iron as the frizz is initially gone but in reality, there will be more frizz from intense heat and the pulling motions combined. Follow these 5 steps to repair the hair:

Step One
Deep conditioning every day with Paul Labrecque Repair Condition instant Condition, will shut the cuticle layer down and let the hair begin to heal itself.

Step Two
Protect your hair with a thermal protector before blow-drying.

Step Three
Only use 100% boar Bristle Round Brushes. What these do is stretch the hair while spreading the natural oils from your own scalp. Because Boar is porous, your own body oils get absorbed into the brush thus using your own sebum to condition your hair. Remember you may need more than one size brush - small for hair around the face especially baby hairs, and larger for hair that is longer in length

Step Four
Use Paul Labrecque Color Finish Polish & Seal Droplets (£15) droplets to soothe away any fly-aways that remain when hair is dry.

Step Five
Always bring a loose scrunchy when walking in humidity to keep your hair away from your face especially if your sweaty in nature. Loose scrunchies never mark the hair and are made of either a soft velvet or Terri.

TREND - Ladies go Gaga For Control Pants

lady gaga underwearPhoto Credit: VJ Alisa! on Flickr

For the first time; sales of big knickers have overtaken thongs, previously a perennial favourite in the lead up to summer, at an astonishing rate of two to one. This could be, in part, due to the trend of wearing 'underwear as outerwear'.

Thanks to the younger generations snapping up the figure-sculpting lingerie, sales of ‘Bridget Jones’ pants, traditionally a winter staple, have leapt up 25% during spring 2009* according to the latest figures from Debenhams. Big pants are flying out of the door in Birmingham and Leeds particularly with sales up 194% and 78% respectively.

Lingerie experts at the fashion retailer have attributed this big pant demand to a trend set by new US popstrel Lady Gaga. Usually a celebrity secret worn underneath figure-hugging dresses by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyonce and Britain’s Got Talent’s Amanda Holden, shapewear is proving to be an unusual hit with the younger generation, who are fans of the ‘Poker Face’ pop singer and self-confessed ‘shapewear as outerwear’ lover, Lady Gaga.

Head of Lingerie Buying, Annette Warburton says: "We thought it strange that we were seeing girls as young as 16 buying our black low-leg control pants with no obvious lumps and bumps to hide. It was only when sales staff reported back their findings that we discovered how young women are copying Lady Gaga’s style and wearing them as hot pants on the nightclub circuit.

"With so many celebrities papped wearing shapewear, these products have become an increasingly acceptable, even essential part of a lingerie wardrobe – perfect under a body-con dress or indeed, on their own.

“The recent advancements in shapewear technology mean that current garments are far removed from the stiff corsets and girdles worn by our grandmothers. They look sleek, create a fabulous figure without any hard work in the gym and can be comfortably worn all night long on the dancefloor".

I can vouch for that. I wore shapewear all day last Saturday while I was fulfilling chief bridesmaid duties. Big pants are a lifesaver!

MUSIC - Sick Muse by Metric

Resulting from a spontaneous get together with a couple of friends and an HD camera in a neighborhood apartment in Toronto, Metric present their newest music video. The candidly shot “Sick Muse” video gives us a glimpse at the off-stage Metric while reminding us why this song has become such a fan favorite. Click the image above to watch the brand new music video for "Sick Muse", from Metric's new album Fantasies. The video is by Michael Leach and Justin Broadbent.

The lead singer, Emily Haines, shows off some fab sparkly outfits in the video; very Kate Moss actually. Sequins and sparkle in antique silver shades have always been a weakness of mine and this only makes me want to go shopping...like, right now!

STYLE - Give it Some Welly

festival fashion wellies

Festival season has snuck up on us, and as every festival fashionista knows - when it rains, it pours. To be on the safe side, wellies are a must and there are plenty of pairs to choose from at the moment. I have selected some of the boots that have caught my eye lately and there should be a pair to suit you all.

If money is no object, then go for these Jimmy Choo designed Hunter wellies. The black snake skin effect boots will ensure you out-chic the next reveller. You will need a few hundred pounds though, oh and did I mention there is a waiting list. Lets move swiftly on...

wellington boots festival fashionIf you like to stand out then Babysham have the perfect wellies for you. Bright pink with a colourful rainbow, these are bound to get you noticed.

wellington boots festival fashionCan't stomach leaving you heels at home? Go for the Shuella, designed to be worn over heels when things get wet. In my opinion, you should be leaving the heels at home, but I won't judge you if you can't manage it.

As for me, I got mine in the winter sale being the bargain hunter I am. Wellies have become a summer staple, rather than a winter essential - all in response to our great outdoor music events and unpredictable English weather.

NEWS - Myla Opens Doors at Bluewater

sexy lingerie underwear designer
One of my favourite lingerie retailers has recently opened a new store at the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent. MYLA flung open its doors on Saturday 23 May and has been running a competition this week, giving away two prizes of vouchers to the sum of £250. If you get down there quick you might just be able to enter too.

Find the new store at Upper Guildhall, Bluewater, Greenhithe, Kent DA9 9ST

The reason I love MYLA, is because the ranges offer sexiness, seduction, comfort and indulgence. The fabrics are fabulous, lace and satin feature heavily. The overall look is one of old-school glamour - exactly how good underwear should be. It makes you feel glamourous when you wear it and that feeling is why it is worth spending the few extra pounds sometimes.

INTERVIEW - Marissa of Makeup and Manicures

make up and manicures interview blog
This week it is the turn of Marissa to be interviewed from the blog, Makeup and Manicures. Pop over to her blog and take a look.

Describe your personal style:

"I would say trendy, but still unique. I like to take chances, but nothing too outrageous!

What are your wardrobe staples?
Dark skinny jeans, black pumps (the higher the better), and the perfect LBD.

What inspires you?
Like most young women, I get inspired by the media, celebrities, fashion magazines and websites, but even more, I get inspired by the clothing itself. When a certain piece catches my eye, I know exactly how to style it and I fall in love!

Who is your fashion muse?
Wow, there are way too many fashion icons to choose from. I think right now, especially for younger women, the Kardashian sisters are really relevant, and always hit the nail on the head in regards to fashion. Their style is trendy, sexy, and fun, and they always look put together.

make up and manicures interview blog
What is your favorite purchase of all time?
I’d have to say this one pair of black heels I bought. They aren’t a designer brand, and they weren’t really expensive, but they are so timeless and classic looking. They are 5 inch, closed-toe pumps (I’m only 5’1 so I need all the height I can get). They go with just about anything – from a cocktail dress, to jeans and a t-shirt.

What has been your biggest splurge?
Well, I’ve never been one to spend a lot on just one item. I’m a recent college grad who still hasn’t found a job due to the economy, but I always manage to find amazing deals. ELLE magazine has an ELLE branded line of women’s clothing at Kohl’s. I found a gorgeous black satin cropped trapeze jacket with black stone embellishments along the collar. I got it on sale for $12.

What’s your daily beauty routine?
After I wash my face, I use a gradual tinted moisturizer (Jergen’s Glow for the face). If I am just going out for the day, I apply some bronzer for an instant glow, and usually a cream eyeshadow so I still look casual, but it gives my eyelids a little shimmer. I am a mascara junkie, so I usually apply more than one coat, and black eyeliner is a must. I top off my look with a nude or pale pink lip gloss, and I’m ready to go!

What jewelry do you never take off?
I have two rings from Tiffany’s that were gifts, and I really only take them off to shower, go to the gym, or when I go out at night and decide to just wear one big cocktail ring. Other than that, I love to play around with fun costume jewelry when I go out, whether it be a fun beaded necklace for during the day, or a dressy, heavy necklace at night."

Thanks again to Marissa. Come back next week for another interview.

JEWELLERY - Beautiful jewellery by Phioro

I love jewellery. Name me a girl who doesn't. So I was excited when I recently stumbled upon Phioro by Clare Pardoe, a model and lover of the creative arts.

Clare comments 'Ever since I can remember I have been passionate about art and design, my enthusiasm for my art allows me to work harder than I’d ever thought possible for the sake of creating the perfect object or design.'

And this enthusiasm shows in the wonderful jewellery and treasures that Clare makes. Clare’s latest series, 'Mother's Love', is a collection of Japanese sake cups and a silver jug. The beauty of the female form has been a big influence in this collection. Out of the work shown on the Phioro website though, the rings are the prettiest in my opinion. There is a daintiness and attention to detail that you find from jewellery designers like Alex Monroe. I am sure Clare is destined to go as far in the world of silversmithing and jewellery design. Clare has already had recognition and exhibited in various events and shows across the country.

The jewellery is simple yet striking and it longs to be touched. I think the dew-drop ring is a bit of a masterpiece with delicate holes in the edge of the silver; it would be my first choice from the selection of jewellery. Take a look at some of the fabulous items below and for more styles visit www.phioro.com

FASHION - Perfect Festival Looks From Lily + Jae

festival fashion styleJune is almost upon us, so what better time to think about your festival fashion choices. One brand has caught my eye at having got it spot on. Lily + Jae is a Canadian fashion label inspired by tom-boys, offering street wear for the girl-next-door. This laid back style makes it ideal for getting outdoors and making you feel great, yet still comfortable. The online store also has some fab circle skirts if you need something a bit more girly.

IDEA - Couture Dresses from Contract Textiles

Have you ever picked up the bed sheet and paraded around in it as a dress? Or perhaps the table cloth is more your thing. Toga parties aside though, Linen Connect, a commercial and contract textiles company, commissioned two Milan dressmakers to come up with something special using their material normally reserved for the likes of restaurants and hotels. The results are shown below, two very different dresses but both are classic and stylish, and miles away from what the fabric would normally be used for.

IDEA - Mary Portas Talks Shopping Neutral

Mary Portas is the renowned 'Queen of shops' and has consulted for huge retail names like Harvey Nichols. You may have seen her face on TV as she goes out and rescues failing stores, but this latest project is her biggest challenge yet. Shopping Neutral is the goal being led by Mary in association with Grazia magazine. The idea is that every time you go shopping, you take your old clothes with you to donate. It keeps your closet clean and the charity shops stocked with quality merchandise.

Mary needs your donations

For the launch of this campaign, Grazia are asking members of the public to donate items with a resale value of at least £5. It can be men's, women's or children's clothes, bric-a-brac, books and accessories. From 4 June for three weeks, Grazia and Mary Portas will be running a pop-up charity shop in The Village at Westfield London, sitting alongside high fashion and designer names. Money raised from this project will go to Save the Children whose work benefits children all over the world.

You don't have to stop shopping, just make sure you are giving something back too. We can all help and lend some support to the charity and those volunteers who offer their time to run shops all over the country.

INTERVIEW - Frankie from Swell Vintage

Frankie from Swell Vintage answered these questions about her personal style over at her blog some time ago, and I have reproduced them for readers of The Style PA. The images show some of Frankie's vintage jewellery creations which you can browse and buy via Etsy.

vintage designs
Describe your personal style:
Ohh this is a toughie. I like to think of my style is quite relaxed and chic. I like classic cuts and, of course, plenty of vintage. I aim to look like a librarian most of the time.

What are the staples in your wardrobe?
These would be vintage dresses, skirts and flats. I need to start investing in heels. I also love a good cardie.

What's your signature look?
A typical Frankie outfit = vintage dress/vintage skirt & long sleeved black top combo, long cardigan (probably from Topshop), black opaque tights, ballet pumps and usually one of my own necklaces. I am a human sandwich board for my stuff.

What inspires you?
Oh, so much! It can be anything for me - old films, 20s-30s fashion, Agatha Christie books, Etsy, old photographs, style blogs, beautiful food or a twee vintage print. I'm open to anything.

Who is your fashion muse?
I think about this a lot, and it's hard as I change my mind all the time. At the moment, I'm loving Daisy Lowe, Chloë Sevigny, Edie Sedgwick (always) and all of the women on ITV's series of Poirot. I'm also continually inspired by the style of my friends, especially Edith and Ruth. They take charity shopping to a whole new level.

vintage designs
Favorite purchase of all time:
My laptop. It changed my life - my name is Frankie, and I am an Internet addict.

Biggest splurge?
I don't tend to spend too much on clothes if I can help it (although I've been more than tempted from time to time). Again, probably my laptop. Although I am due a new one...

What's your beauty routine?
I try to keep it simple, as my skin can be a pain in the arse! I use a face wipe to get my make up off, then Dermalogica face wash, an Anne French cleanser/toner thing then moisturiser - Dermalogica for day, Olay for night. Wow, that's not very simple, is it?

What jewellery do you never take off?
A sterling silver t-bar bracelet, which was a gift from my Mother. Classic.

What are you wishing for?
Exciting times ahead. Especially in regard to my jewellery.

What are your obsessions?
At the moment, it's Twitter, Flickr, How I Met Your Mother, Polaroid film, making lockets and fussing over my new fringe.

VIDEO - 'The Heidi Klum' Issue of German Vogue

I love Heidi Klum. Not only a model, but a wife, mother, TV presenter and brand in her own right. In the video above, you can get an insight into how Vogue shoot their amazing fashion stories, with Heidi posing as different characters all with 1950's feel. The shoot took place in the Californian dessert, and on Rodeo Drive and there is a wardrobe full of fabulous clothes, as you would expect. This feature makes up part of German Vogue's 'The Heidi Issue'. She literally stops traffic when the cameras take to Beverly Hills.

You just get the impression that Heidi Klum is a fun person to be around. She is constantly being photographed in fancy dress and recently renewed her wedding vows in a white trash themed ceremony. And of course, she is stunning.

You can also catch Heidi in Spiked Heel episodes. These short videos are a fun 'superhero' take on modelling. All a bit of light-hearted fun which suits Heidi Klum's personality.

TIPS - Buying Underwear That Fits

Many people don't enjoy shopping for lingerie. The main reason is that they struggle to find underwear that fits correctly and is comfortable to wear. There are two ways to rectify this problem; get fitted for your bra and shop the styles that suit your body shape. To help us all be more savvy when shopping for our knickers and bras, Annette Warburton, the Head of Lingerie Buying at Debenhams, shares her tips on choosing lingerie for your body shape. You can also read about my bra fitting experience or visit the lingerie trends page at Debenhams for more on the same topic.

Are you making these mistakes?

  • Wearing the wrong size bra. 70% of all women wear the wrong bra size. It is extremely important to get fitted by an expert. Debenhams offers a free bra fitting service in store by expertly trained advisers which will ensure you are wearing the best bra for your shape and size, making you look and feel great!
  • Many women choose bras that are too small for them in the hope that it will increase their cleavage. This in fact just creates a four boob effect. This is where your breasts push out above the cups, which is neither attractive nor comfortable. Simply buy a bra designed to increase your cleavage. Ultimo have some great plunge bras that will give you maximum cleavage and enhanced shape.
  • Not allowing your lingerie to match your personal style. Choosing lingerie styles to suit your personality will help you to feel more comfortable with your body. If you’re a fan of 50’s inspired clothes opt for lingerie with a vintage feel, such as fuller pants with frill detailing in silky, feminine materials. If you have a love for lace, choose bras and pants with lace detailing to boost your confidence.
  • Too many women only own one style of bra. It is important to have a variety of bra styles and colours to ensure you are wearing the most appropriate style for the outfit and the occasion. One bra will not suffice for everything. A black, white, flesh, multi-way, sports, plunge and strapless bra are all staples and should be in every girl’s lingerie drawer.
  • Not thinking about your body shape when choose lingerie. It is important to make the most of your assets. Too many women forget to think about choosing underwear to emphasise their best features and draw attention away from their problem areas.

Read on for tips and ideas to help you dress for your shape.

Boyish Figure
You have: Usually slim with few curves and narrow hips
Best feature: Toned arms and legs
Celeb Style: Kate Moss, Keira Knightly, Kirsten Dunst, Cameron Diaz

Boy shorts are great for this type of figure as they show off and accentuate a toned behind. If you are not blessed in the breast department then you can emphasise your cleavage with a padded or under wired-bra. Balcony styles are great for giving an instant uplift and are bang on trend this summer for glamour. Flirty pink bras are also perfect for petite body shapes and add will extra ‘girlyness’.

Apple Figure
You have: Slim legs and arms while you carry your weight around your tummy.
Best Feature: Legs
Celeb Style: Liz Hurley, Drew Barrymore, Tyra Banks

Gorgeous Bra £18 Briefs £8 - Star by Julien Macdonald body £25.00

There’s no need sacrifice comfort for sexiness when you have a large bust – if you’ve got it flaunt it girl!! Reach for bras that make the most of your chest assets making sure they are lifted and supported. Bras with good full cups are great for the apple shape. Bottoms that fit low on the hips are also perfect and will flatter the apple shape. Bodices are also a great alternative, a lace body like the Julien MacDonald shocking pink body demonstrates the golden rule of drawing attention to the cleavage and emphasising the chest.

Pear Shaped
You have: Narrow shoulder, small bust with larger hips and bum.
Best feature: Shapely hips.
Celeb Style: Kate Winslet, Coleen Rooney, Beyonce Knowles

bra underwear lingerie

J by Jasper Conran Bra £20 Hipster £8 - Presence Bra £12.50 Hipster £6

The goal here is to balance the body shape so, wear push-up or padded bras to add volume to your top half, this will make the upper half of your body look more in proportion. Choose a set that has a fuller pant, this will shape and lift your derriere making you feel and look oh so sexy! Avoid frill details on your pants they will emphasise your larger hips and smaller bust. The key is to try and create a balance. The sets shown above have padded busts with full bottoms to help lift and define.

Hour Glass
You have: Curvaceous hips and bust with a small waistline. You are one of the lucky ones: this is the classic female shape!
Best Feature: Your feminine, voluptuous curves.
Celeb Style: Mariah Carey, Dita Von Teese

You lucky thing — there’s nothing that you can’t wear! But corsets can help to extra- emphasise your small waist and sexy hips. You have got the most desired shape so if your feeling confident pick a dramatic print and make a statement. These fun pieces are great as the prints draw attention to your feminine body whilst still emphasizing your curves.

INTERVIEW - Laura Silver of BitchBuzz

Another little blogger interview for you. This is becoming a regular feature, and I have Twitter to thank for that. This week Laura from BitchBuzz spills the beans on her sense of style.

'Tell us about yourself:
I am a style writer for BitchBuzz.com, and I love beauty products, Nick Cave, folk music, Rodarte, Pat McGrath make-up looks and cooking!

Describe your personal style
I like ultra feminine clothes with a rock-chick twist, so a band t-shirt with a mini and ultra high heels, or a cute dress with messy hair, smoky eyes and a baggy cardigan. I like to add a personal twist to looks, but I can be a bit of a sucker for trends!

What are your wardrobe staples?
Black lantern skirt, plain fitted t-shirts, opaque tights, metal studded Mary-Janes and a loose cardigan. Always feels casual enough for the day, but dressy enough when you end up in the pub!

What inspires you?
I love Victorian style and extravagant tulle dresses. The Quasimi A/W 09 show was beautiful, and the whimsical surrealism of Tim Walker makes me want to sit in a field of flowers wearing John Galliano couture! In a more real world way, other people inspire me. It’s great to see how someone interprets style and wears clothes completely differently from how I would have though of doing so.

Who is your fashion muse?
I know it’s a cliché, but I love how Mary-Kate Olsen has mastered glamorous grunge to a fine art.

What is your favourite purchase of all time?
About six or seven years ago I bought a black corduroy blazer from H&M and I still wear it now. It doesn’t sound very exciting, but the fit is just right, it never really goes out of style, and it goes with everything!

What has been your biggest splurge?
Shopping when in holiday-mode is not a good idea. When I was in New York earlier this year I spent nearly $200 on a sheer, balloon-sleeved, paisley print mini dress from a boutique in Greenwich Village. I do love it though! Most of my clothes are quite cheap though as I’m a bit of a high-street queen!

What's your daily beauty routine?
I cleanse tone and mosturise with a Vaishaly face wash, Neal’s Yard Rose Water and Liz Earle Moisturiser respectively. Make-up wise, I tend to go neutral with a lot of eyeliner! I use MAC Select SPF 15 foundation, Benefit Thrrob Blusher, 3 shades of brown MAC eyeshadow, Lancome black kohl on the upper lash-line, MAC eyeliner in ‘forest green’ on the lower lash line, and DiorShow mascara in black. I take it all off at the end of the day with Lush’s ultrabland. Phew!

What jewellery do you never take off?
A big silver claw like ring that my parents gave me for my 21st birthday, and an Art Nouveau silver ring that I nicked from my mum!'

Thanks to Laura for answering these style questions. I am also guilty of 'borrowing' a few items from my mum's closet or jewellery cabinet! Be sure to visit BitchBuzz for all manner of daily diversions, including posts covering style, technology, celebrity and interiors.

LINGERIE - My Debenhams Bra Fitting

underwear lingerie bra fitting

Debenhams has been running a campaign urging women to get measured for their bras. The service is completely free, and I buy a lot of my underwear from Debenhams already, yet I had never been fitted myself. I am ashamed to admit it, but I just never prioritised it highly enough.

The fitting

To trial the service, I went to the Oxford Street branch of Debenhams and got fitted for a bra. My fitter was fabulous, friendly and a real expert. She started off by measuring under my bust and asking what size I currently wore. To be honest, she could pretty much tell what size I was just by looking (some men claim to be able to do that, but they would lose against this lady I tell you).

My fitter went to get me some styles to try in two cup sizes. After trying on a couple of styles it became clear that in bras with padding I would require one size, but on those without straps I would need a slightly smaller size. I had no idea about this before, my bra shopping consisted of a 'best guess' approach which, when you think about it, is just silly. We wouldn't guess at our shoe size, so why guess at our bra size? The difference with your boobs of course, is that the size changes; perhaps because of weight loss/gain or just as another part of that dreaded ageing process. We should be getting measured at least once a year if not more regularly than that and I certainly will in future.

The one thing that stood out at my fitting, is that you really get the first class treatment. You need never leave the changing room with your fitter fetching you the sizes and styles you need. The best bit is that the bra fitter will come and check the fit of the straps and ensure the cup is supporting you where it should. Did you know that when you buy a bra, it should always be worn on the last hook? This is because bras stretch over time and you may need to start wearing it tighter to compensate. The back of the bra should also always be in line with the front. If the back rides up, this is a sign that the bra is too big.

As it turned out, I had (like many women) been wearing bras with the wrong cup size. I am a cup size bigger than I thought I was, meaning I could now shop from the 'fuller bust' section. Get me! The proof of the value of getting measured came afterwards though. I thought I would go and browse the store and try on some bras in my new size on my own. Every single bra fitted perfectly, which is something that has not happened in a long time.

My Choice

bra underwear lingerie
I chose to take home a bright patterned set by Masquerade. This bra stood out for me as it was super summery and unlike anything I already had in my collection. I also thought it might look cute if you caught a glimpse down my shirt! Underwear can be seen but still subtle, after all, good underwear should make you feel sexy.

What do you think of my choice?

Also, leave a comment below letting me know when you last got measured. It would be really interesting to know who else has let this important task slip.

Check back later this week for some lingerie buying tips from Debenhams Head of Lingerie Buying.

HAIR - Pudding Bowl Voted Recessionista Fave

recession haircut hairstylesPhoto Credit: JO87 on Flickr

The iconic Pudding Bowl hairstyle, made famous by the likes of Joanna Lumley in the 1970s and more recently by Adele, has been voted as the UK’s top recessionista hairstyle by women’s website handbag.com. The bowl cut was chosen by handbag.com as the UK’s number one recession busting hairstyle because of its blunt simplicity, which can be easily and cheaply achieved at home.

handbag.com Beauty Editor Katie Corcoran says, “Hairstyles, like fashion come and go in popularity; in the handbag.com office we’ve seen a growing trend towards hairstyles that can be cut, styled and simply managed at home. Our recessionista readers are looking for cost effective ways to look and feel fantastic. With the Pudding Bowl topping the poll, it is evident that hairstyles, like lifestyles, are reflecting today’s economic crisis.”

The Top 5 UK Recessionista Hairstyles as chosen by handbag.com are included below along with some tips on how to get the look from celebrity hairdresser, Errol Douglas:

1: Pudding Bowl
Worn by celebrities such as Brit singer Adele this cut get’s its name because the hair is cut in the shape of a pudding bowl – literally! Although handbag.com wouldn’t suggest getting a pudding bowl and cutting hair around it, what this style does do once cut professionally is grow out well (one cut may save you months of appointments!). It is manageable, great for most hair types and face shapes, and apparently, incredibly fashionable!

Errol Douglas says 'to style the pudding bowl, blow dry it using a round brush with everything going under. Otherwise, use the largest tongs you have or ghds and bend them under as you use them.'

2: Tiffany Tom Boy
Gracing the head of Victoria Beckham – it’s short, manageable and the tousled top sections can be self trimmed, then slicked down. The side-sweeping fringe honours Audrey Hepburn.

Errol Douglas says ' the best thing about this look is the versatility – wear it dishevelled and tousled with product and it looks really cool and gives height to the crown; style it with less product and you get a much more elegant finish. I wouldn’t recommend cutting it yourself but if you’re going to, pull the top sections up straight, hold between your fingers an inch from the top and let the ends fan out, then randomly break up with the point of the scissors. If you’re going to cut at home, invest in some proper hairdressing scissors – regular scissors will mangle the hair.'

3: Soho Rock Chic
The rebellious hair of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller is tamed but not styled, without a rigid cut in sight. It’s artfully messy, shoulder length or longer hair with volume, texture and usually a full on fringe. The dishevelled boho rock chic is an effortless look for maximum wow factor – mess is best.

Errol Douglas says 'to manage this style, start off with a bit of root movement by using a paddle or vent brush. It should look matte rather than shiny, so use a matte gel or putty. Steal your boyfriend’s products for this one to save on pennies!'

4: Rebellious Roots
Following in the footsteps of Mischa Barton and Madonna, roots are no longer an embarrassment and are currently being embraced. It couldn’t be simpler or cheaper to achieve - let the hair grow to get back to the roots for a look that will complement any style.

Errol Douglas says 'There’s a fine line with roots – 2 or 3 inches isn’t good but a couple of centimetres can look great! Plaiting hair with re-growth is a good way to make the most of it as the contrast of colours looks beautiful, or kiss curls, anything flat to the head. Don’t do anything too quiffy – if the hair lifts up you’ll get too obvious a line. If you know you’re not going to have regular retouches make sure your stylist chooses similar colours to start with – this makes regrowth far more subtle and easier to wear.'

5: Skin Head
Probably the most extreme of all recessionista hairstyles but only for the very brave. No hair is maintenance free so this is a true get up and go look. The likes of Erykah Badu and M&S model Noemie Lenoir have carried off the skinhead look to perfection.

Errol Douglas says 'obviously there’s minimum upkeep for this look, but I’d recommend using a wax to rejuvenate and make the scalp look healthy.

DESIGNER - e.g... made in London

Just over a week ago, I went to a Fashion and web networking event and was lucky enough to meet Jeanpierre and Emma of e.g... made in London, a fresh new fashion label. The creative brains behind the label belong to Emma Griffiths (that would explain the e.g.) and Emma has worked with the likes of Alexander McQueen and Boudicca. I think that is all the endorsement they need! But in case you were wondering, Susie Bubble of Style Bubble and Michelle of Kingdom of Style have both praised the new label and these are ladies whose opinions are respected the UK over.

So what do I think of the designs? The sharp tailoring and bold silhouettes make for a contemporary style statement. The strong shapes hint at influences from eighties power dressing which I love. Exaggerated shoulders were all over the catwalk earlier in the year and Emma is ahead of the game on getting this into her online store.

I particularly love the bubble look hem and colour blocking on these dresses (below). The colour palette is fabulous mixing a subdued base colour with a bright accent. These are pretty and playful with confident lines and a belted waist to enhance the female figure.
Other parts of the collection have a more boyish shape, like these sharp shirts (below). I would wear mine tucked into a tight pencil skirt for an enviable office look. Expect to pay between £100 up to just under £600 for the beautiful coats, but from what I hear, the quality of the cutting makes them worth every penny.

VIDEO - Chanel Advert with Audrey Tautou

I was annoyed when I saw this advert, because it reminded me that I am pretty much out of Chanel no5. It is a strong scent, but one steeped in history and glamour. Who would not want a bottle on their dressing table. Classic, elegant and enchanting... just like Audrey Tautou, who will be playing Coco Chanel in the upcoming film of her life, Coco Avant Chanel. Looking forward to seeing that one with the girls.

The song featured in the advert is by Billie Holiday, 'I'm a fool to want you' and it matches the mood perfectly.

FASHION - Tristan Blair at Amelie

stiletto designer heels
I am loving the collection of Tristan Blair shoes, new in at Amelie Boutique. They are confident, bold and include stylish details such as studs and laces. The muted palette will go with everything in your wardrobe, but somber hues aside, they are far from boring. The zip detail on the shoes pictured below is completely on-trend, as is the colour blocking.

CELEBRITY - Kylie and Gordon Ramsay the Ultimate Power Couple?

celebrity power couplesPhoto Credit: bart234465 on Flickr

Forget TomKat …The next powerhouse couple according to the ‘Power of 2’ study is none other than foul-mouthed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and pop princess Kylie Minogue.

In the study, Gaviscon Double Action Tablets used a unique power of 2 formula developed by relationship expert and psychotherapist Paula Hall to calculate the ultimate partnership, based on talent, ambition and good looks. Beating off strong competition including Simon Cowell and Chris Martin, Ramsay scored full marks for his combination of determination and global success. Miss Minogue, who arguably has become as known for her singing abilities as her wardrobe and charitable work, also topped the chart with a perfect score.

celebrity power couplesCelebrity romances are well-known vehicles for career progression as the inimitable force that is Posh & Becks has proven – Brand Beckham is worth an estimated £40 million. To identify the ultimate “Power Partnership” – fictional or otherwise, the power of 2 study took into account factors including the column inches each celebrity commands as well as career longevity to date and projected earnings.

Says Claire McCormack from Gaviscon Double Action, “The aim of the work we conducted with Paula Hall was to explore the impact that two individuals have when they join forces and the effect that partnership has on the public perception of them.”

Celebrity pairings that didn’t score so highly:
  • Gordon Ramsay and Kylie Minogue - 30
  • Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz - 20
  • Roman Abramovich and Madonna - 18.6
  • Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet - 13.5
  • Chris Martin and Nigella Lawson - 8.3
  • Simon Cowell and Keira Knightley - 7.7
  • Kanye West and Jennifer Aniston - 6.3
  • Lewis Hamilton and Leona Lewis - 4.7
See how you match with the celebrities

Says Hall, “It's that time of year when budding romances flourish. Although a purely fictional union, Gordon and Kylie as individuals are respected for their achievements, but together they become an unbeatable force. Both come from humble roots from opposite corners of the world and each has been decorated with an OBE; their popularity goes beyond their professional lives into their personal commitments as well.”

Real Couples

Paula Hall has also analysed real couples, always in the media spotlight, to highlight the strengths that each individual brings to the partnership:

David and Victoria Beckham (Power of two score 25)
David is talented and committed to everything he does career and family-wise. He has a cool temperament and he is quiet and considered; nothing he does is unplanned. Victoria, like David, is dedicated to the family and although she has learnt to take more of a back seat, she is far more spontaneous and competitive. Their complimentary strengths come into play in the decision-making process.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes (Power of two score 18.3)
Tom is Mr. Clean and his reputation means everything to him. Both in his public and personal life he likes to be a leader, which is why his partnership with Katie creates such a balance. Katie is happy to be a follower, but their core values remain the same and they are both dedicated to their family and friends.

BARGAIN - Belted Floral Top at Asda

floral belted top

Check out the modest price tag on this on-trend top. Just £12 for an eighties inspired print, in a vibrant palette which Katy Perry would be proud to wear. Sometimes it really is worth diverting your attention from food shopping, and looking at what the supermarkets have to offer, fashion-wise. Go for the bolder, more trend inspired pieces and you will be less likely to run into your mum, or worse, your nan, wearing the same thing.

The top would look great with little black shorts and heels, or perhaps skinny jeans and sandals. The ruffle detail is yet another nod to an established trend right now and the belted waist keeps it flattering and feminine.

INTERVIEW - Denise of The Swelle Life

I am always looking to support other bloggers and web business owners, not only that, I am interested in their approach to style. Denise from The Swelle Life has answered some questions below to give us a peek into her style psyche and perhaps also inspire us just a little bit.

fashion style blogger interview
Tell us about yourself:
I'm a Canadian living in the northeast of England with my husband and three year-old daughter. I left my career in marketing to concentrate on what I love which is indulging my passion for fashion and all things beautiful. As well as writing The Swelle Life, I contribute to four other fashion websites and also design and make my own accessories such as hand-felted, embellished handbags, neck-pieces and corsages - which I'm just getting back into again, I miss it so much and will do my best to balance the writing with the creating. New shop to launch soon! I very recently spent two months in Paris and attended several fashion week shows and after that, there's no going back!

Describe your personal style:
I tend to do 'ladylike' on the outside, which covers what is sometimes a bit haphazard underneath! I love proper structured hats, my pale pink felt cloche that I had custom made by a Toronto milliner is my favourite. And I have a silk tweed pink mix belted coat that is quite light just feels great to wear, it's about six years old and always looks fresh, I'll have it forever. I like to look put-together but without the effort because I just can't be bothered with anything that takes much fuss! Which explains my long hair that is always blow-dry and go. And while I love to do head to toe 'proper lady' it's usually the good jacket and scarf over jeans and some kind of old t-shirt with a long, interesting necklace. I don't consciously try to mix rough and pretty but that's usually the result so I guess that's my inherent style. And I adore dresses, I like to try to wear them everyday unless it's just not practical. I love good boots and heels (of course!) but thanks to a knee problem I have to think of my health first so I opt for my Kings riding boots by Paul Smith which look great with anything and you can walk forever in them. So it's hardly a compromise!

What are your wardrobe staples?
Great jackets and coats, long, beautiful scarves, dresses you can wear everyday and just enough necklaces that you always have something you can wear with anything. And a couple pairs of shoes or boots that will go with just about everything so you don't have to stress about it as you get ready to go out the door! And can't forget the charming tights.

Channelling Edie Beale last Halloween

What inspires you?
Romantic, beautiful images; anything French; pale pinks, ivories, lilacs and powder blues; peonies (I can't keep from touching their super-lush petals) and Piaget roses (they smell like perfume). Anything that lifts my spirits when I look at it, touch it or, I guess, smell it!

Who is your fashion muse?
The women of Paris. I just returned from two months there and no one else does it like they do. They look so put together, but it's effortless, because it comes from within. French women are confident, smart and savvy. And it shows. And they let themselves age which something we need to take note of. I'll never forget a 60ish year old woman sitting on a bench by the Seine who was the most stunning vision I have ever seen.

What is your favourite purchase of all time?
I'm sure there is something from my past I will think of later, but what comes to mind is a Les Bijoux de Sophie silver anchor necklace with pale pink porcelain flowers on a long silver chain (there's a name for those flowers that I can't recall!). It reminds me of Paris, it's from the most incredible boutique in the Marais aptly called Joy, which is owned by a most elegant, older French woman and her change room was so charming I took photos and dedicated a blog post to it. It had a red velvet-topped dark wood vanity with old Anais Nin diaries and other French books atop, a white wicker bird cage on the floor and a gorgeous hand-blown glass vase with a large feather plume and the most charming floral wallpaper. I didn't want to leave! As for the necklace, it's handmade, unique, delicate and beautiful. And it brings with it those memories. What more could you want?

What has been your biggest splurge?
On a single item, that would be the indigo blue leather jacket that I bought last month in Antwerp at Chine. It's a bit of a biker style without the biker-style lapels, it's got a lot of zippers but it's a bit more chic than rock 'n' roll. Funny, it was a bit of a rougher look I was going for, but in the end that's just not me!

What's your daily beauty routine?
Night time is where I concentrate my efforts. I use Eve Lom cleanser which you apply to dry skin and then apply a hot muslin cloth three times to activate the cleansing oils, then I use the cloth to exfoliate. I've used this cleanser for three years and I haven't had a dry patch of skin since and my skin has never felt cleaner. I use Naturopathica moisturisers for day (from the U.S.), they use pure, botanical ingredients (really all-natural as opposed to those that say they are but are full of chemicals, they define each and every ingredient on their website). And Clarins makes fantastic brightening products, such as their Beauty Flash balm which really does work - a must-have for days you don't look your best or want to look really great!

What jewellery do you never take off?
My wedding band! I think I took some kind of vow about that. I do like to wear a necklace or neck-piece with everything unless it's overkill, as well as something on my wrist as I've built up a bit of a collection recently. But I'm certainly more of a minimalist, I like the pieces to speak for themselves.'

Thanks again to Denise for answering the questions. How fabulous it must be to spend time in Paris. Be sure to visit her blog www.theswellelife.com and leave a comment if you have a spare few minutes.
