DETAIL - The Must-Have Peplum

This detail may sound like a part of the body, or something you would strum a guitar with. In fact the peplum is neither of those, it is the skirted edge which you will find on many a garment at the moment. It sits above the hips and is generally attached to a fitted jacket or pencil skirt like an over skirt or ruffle. When the tailoring fits just right, this is a smart and flattering choice and mega trendy too.

I love the exaggerated peplum detailing on this dress. It makes it super-feminine and stylish all at once.

Dorothy Perkins has lots of peplum dresses including this fitted pink one. Shop more at the Dorothy Perkins website

The perfect party peplum dress, this black version with sheer panel is sexy and stylish.

Some peplum dresses remind me of my party dresses as a child growing up in the eighties, but the peplum was probably most fashionable in the forties. Have you tried the peplum dress yet?

TREND - Turn up the Contrast

ASOS mentioned high contrast colour combinations in a recent email newsletter, and I was already poised with a half written post on the very same subject. Holly Willoughby was spotted working the look recently, and in fact, it works even better on blondes. You need to be comfortable with colour but most people can get away with a bit of a clash, especially if you keep it strong and block colour - avoid fussy details and make sure the colours are the same sort of tone (don't mix a cool blue with a warm purple, it won't work so well).

Clash blue and purple. Bruises might not be pretty, but purple and blue certainly can be. Use as the inspiration for your outfit and you will be sure to stand out. I just love both the dresses in my Polyvore design above, the details are beautiful, but the price tags pretty hefty!

Clash red and yellow. This colour combo is for more than just lifeguards. Fiery and exciting, and it really reminds me of summer too. Heat things up.

Clash pink and green. Pink and green should often be seen. You need to be brave, but give it a try. Keep accessories to a minimum and show off your bold colour combo. I like the different textures in the look above too; the wool of the dress mixed with the patent bag - yet another contrast.

ACCESSORIES - Bargain DVB Sunglasses

Grab a bargain and a little bit of Victoria Beckham's style at the same time. Catwalk to Closet have just got a haul of DVB sunglasses in, and they are heavily discounted too. Discounted accessories are by far my favourite kind. There is a good selection to choose from, including aviators, brights and the trademark of Mrs Beckham herself, the dark rimmed and over-sized.

Catwalk to Closet is an online, designer, sample sale. They often get their hands on exciting, hard to find pieces and are well worth a regular visit.

NEWS - What's New at Myla?

MODEL IN LINGERIE
Myla has announced model and socialite Poppy Delevigne as the new face of Spring Summer 2009. The 16 shot campaign will be unveiled in store early February.

Poppy is a renowned UK based top model, she has previously worked with top fashion brands including Versace, Anya Hindmarch and Bamford & Sons and appeared on the covers of English Tatler, L’official and New York magazine.

This season the shoot draws inspiration from the soft romanticism and heady nostalgia of the 1970’s. The collection focuses on the trend for retrospective vintage silhouettes with an ethereal and girly innocence. Pretty ruffles , delicate florals, ultra sheer lace and dreamlike vintage embroidery are key. (See my other posts about sheer and chiffon being big for spring).

As always Myla continues to offers a beautiful array of soft feminine styles in delicious silk chiffon or satin. Choose from Annabelle pretty peep soft bras and button back knickers in delicate rosebud printed chiffon or Daisy peach silk chiffon with flower dye cut appliqué detail. Chic teddy’s come in pure silk satin with leavers lace overlay detail in dusky rose, heather or floral print.

VIDEO - Matthew Williamson Goes Travelling

The Matthew Williamson show, during fashion week, featured the global traveller trend heavily, with little hints at safari through animal prints and stone hues. This traveller is like an early 1990's hippy look. No purples or velvet, but more of an eco vibe with earth tones and a nod to those fab bright colours that Williamson is famed for. Look out for the cream mini shift dress, with beaded detail - my favourite piece of the show.

TREND - Chiffon, Nudes and Pastels

It seems that Spring is going to be a shock to the system in terms of the amount of flesh on show. After a winter of heavy coats we are all going to be wearing the floatiest and sheerest of fabrics. So how should we wear them?

The Blouse
I like mine ruffled and girly. This is really easy to get away with as you can wear a spaghetti strap vest underneath for daytime, and a structured bra under in the evening. Don't go for a lace bra as well as that really would be a flesh overload. Karen Millen do some lovely ones (follow link to Polyvore above)

The Undies
The easiest way to do see through is underneath your clothes. Try stores like Myla for a great baby doll or chemise to keep the other half smiling.

The Kaftan
Perfect for the beach, but also pretty good for the evening too. If on holiday you can wear a bikini underneath and not raise any eyebrows, but back home it might be better to buy a slip or wear hot pants and a vest.

The Dress
The outer layers of the dress can be sheer whilst under layers more opaque. The effect is an on trend garment with no embarrassments. Try patterned dresses, or paler block colours like peach, cream and pink. A paler palette is a must for spring 2009.

The Cover Up
Cardigan style cover ups, scarves and shrugs are a perfect way to throw on some chiffon style. You could even scour the thrift stores for something with antique charm.

The Skirt
The hardest garment to balance out in my opinion. A mini skirt with ruffles and a plain vest work well, but don't go for anything too long. You don't want to look like you are wearing the net curtains.

NEWS - Evian's Haute Couture Bottle

water bottle designer
Fashion designers know the key to a good collection combines the reinvention of ideas with underlying signature qualities, and Evian® Natural Spring Water is keeping to these same ideals with the release of the newest addition to its designer collection. Evian has partnered with French designer Jean Paul Gaultier to produce five unique and exclusive creations for 2009, the Evian Haute Couture Bottles by Jean Paul Gaultier.

Expertly crafted at the prestigious House of Baccarat, only five of the Haute Couture Bottles will be released worldwide, with these few exclusive carafes travelling to capital cities around the globe to be exhibited at select locations. The collection will be returned to France in March, where they will be auctioned off to raise money for the RAMSAR convention, whose work to preserve wetlands around the world has been supported by Evian for the past 10 years.

I want one, but something tells me I won't be able to afford it!

TIPS - Dare to Wear Flares

Victoria Beckham has been championing flares recently, but there are certain tips which can help you look better in this seventies inspired trouser choice.

  • Don't fall victim to the invisible feet problem. Wear heels and make sure your flares are long, but not too long.
  • Go for darker denim for a sleeker, more slimming look.
  • Team with a tailored or fitted top. This will help balance the width at the bottom of the trousers.
  • Curvy girls should try jeans with a low waist. This cuts the bum in half making it appear smaller than it actually is... bonus!
  • Jackets should be no longer than the hips. Shorter jackets look better with flared trousers, as do tops tucked into the waist band.

Gucci and Moschino have been championing an underwater lagoon of colours and with this palette there really is a shade to suit every complexion. From green and turquoise to the deepest blue, add ruffles and waterfall details to further enhance the underwater look.

Dress it up or down but try and go floaty rather than tight. This style is all about fluidity and movement within the fabrics.

BOOK - Style, Naturally: The Global Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty

Style, Naturally: The Global Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty
Summer Rayne Oakes is a model, activist and entrepreneur and Style, Naturally is her recently released book on sustainable fashion and beauty.

Summer’s work spans multiple disciplines, all of which are deeply imbued in environmental issues, including waste management, organic contaminants & environmental health, landscape impact analysis and sustainable development. This work often overlaps with her environmentally-relevant, values-based modelling, for which she is largely recognised. Find out more over at the Summer Rayne Oakes's website.

Style, Naturally: The Global Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty
The book's aim according to Summer, is to elevate the profiles of environmental and social issues through style. The book encourages readers to spare a thought for the effects that the clothes they wear have on the health of our planet, and although most of us will never manage to live a life as sustainable as the author, if we make a couple of small changes after reading it, that is of benefit to the world we live in.

Summer explains how the fashion industry is only just coming round to an idea of sustainable style and this makes her book perfectly timed. I know of many up and coming brands that use sustainability as a unique selling point for their goods, but this is definitely a fairly new concept. The big designers are certainly slower to follow suit and find it harder to adapt their ideas to fit with eco-friendly ethics.

Style, Naturally: The Global Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty
The danger of a book like this is that it will become preachy, but Summer has not fallen into that trap. The book is informative, while still being fun to read - an emphasis is placed, in fact, on not following the rules, so it would be hypocritical of the author to instruct us in that way.

All in all a good read that grounds both the historical environment of sustainable fashion and beauty and that is also a commentary of the state of things today. It is also full of products, brands and websites that I had not considered before, and for that reason alone is a fashionista 'must read'.

ICONS - The Saturdays do Retro Glamour

I love a bit of Retro glamour and that is what the Saturdays are getting right in their latest video for Charity single 'Just can't get enough'. The stylists have given the girls a really young, fresh look with lots of colour, lots of leg on show and they are always seen in massive platform heels (to make us all envy those long legs even more).

music pop fashion style
Yes they are very Girls Aloud, but it sells, and there is plenty of room for a little more fun in the charts. Seeing all those figure hugging outfits certainly make me want to hit the gym. I found it hard to find an image of the Saturdays which wasn't a press image, but did eventually. They even look good when dressing down - all except Molly in those toothpaste trousers!

BOOK - Time Out's Little Black Book of London

time out guide little black book
Time Out’s The Little Black Book of London, is the insider’s must-have directory to living in the capital. The guide is packed with information and contacts for everything from quirky ideas for a night out to the most fashionable shops to where to find the finest birthday cake. The guide reveals hidden treasures across the capital – even offering surprises for those who have lived and worked in London all their life.

The Style PA's resident Londoner, Davida, went out to see if some of the hot spots featured in the book are worthy of their mention.

The Pineapple

Sausage Sundays, Quiz Mondays and Cheese Thursday’s; All in one pub?

Yes yes yes! If you enjoy an eclectic mix of good ole’ English ale, thick red velvet upholstery and weekly pub quizzes united lovingly with the taste of the orient (Thai) menu and the Moroccan style conservatory out back, then, like me, this is the place for you.

This pub literally has all you could ask for, and then even more heaped on top. The last Saturday of every month is great for a girl’s night out with their famous ‘cocktail Saturdays’ and any man worth his weight in sausages could not refuse the chance to indulge in FREE sausages on a Thursday afternoon, between 3pm and 6pm. N.B – If conversation is getting slow, and you’ve finished your Thai prawn crackers see how many Pineapples you can count – I’m on 10!

Lemon Monkey
lemon monkey city food deli
Us Londoners all know that Stoke Newington, whilst having no tube station (huff puff) is the one of the coolest cats in town for pubs, restaurants and cafés, and the Lemon Monkey, my friends is no exception. Part Deli, part café this place serves exquisite cappuccinos in big old 70’s style cups, an amazing selection of cheese and soft chewy sweet banana’s, which if your wondering if that goes with coffee – oh yes it does!

Le Mercury

Amor, Amor, Amor…the place screams romance and lurve. Candle lit twosome tables, fairy lights adorning the windows, French waiters, cocktails, champagne, steak… the list is endless on why this place is literally the hottest place for couples. Want to know what makes It even better? All choices in each course are the same price so you know you can afford it. Now, I’m not one to endorse the act of polygamy, but if you are a serial dater than this place is perfecto. You can wine and dine your lover and be safe in the knowledge that it won’t cost more than fifty of your English pounds for two people to enjoy a 3 course meal with booze – a bonus in my (little black) book!

The Duke of Cambridge

pub organic food city
It’s hard deciding where to eat when you have such a wealth of choice in a place like Angel, however I strongly recommend this little gem just off the main high street. Everything and I mean everything, from the entire food and drink selection down to the tampon machine in the toilets, is organic - and what they do… they do well.

A vast bar and restaurant area houses beautiful big wooden tables (for that true rustic 'could be eating in a forest type feel'), and a fantastic atmosphere – I think it’s that feeling everyone has when they know that fundamentally they are doing something good – like eating wholesome organic food as opposed to a McDonald’s.

I ordered vegetarian chilli and a glass of house red, both excellent, and my brother enjoyed a steak and ale pie which he said he had already had 3 times but kept coming back for more, surely a good sign. Don’t be put off by the price and remember it’s more expensive than usual because of how the produce is sourced – when I left I felt like I should become like Barbara Good and embark upon the whole self-sufficiency thing, then remembered I wanted a new pair of shoes and a holiday!

Davida's verdict on the little black book...

An excellent book, that fits neatly into your hand bag, like its name sake. Full of really good places to go and see and all helpfully laid out in geographical sections for you to navigate yourself around. My only criticism is that I assumed there would be a London underground map somewhere in it, usually the middle pages is where I look. This would be really helpful to readers as they could see how to get to the wonderful locations mentioned. Some bus routes may be useful too.

All in all a thoroughly good book to have, for those who think they know London inside out and for those who have never set foot in our gracious capital before. I’m glad I have my copy.

The Little Black Book of London costs £7.99 and is available from www.timeout.com/shop and all good bookshops now.

NO NO - The Not So Chic Sneaker

puma trainers sneaker shoe heels
Trainers are for sports, comfort and urban style... they do not in my opinion, require a heel. Heels serve a different purpose entirely. These leather and rubber shoes by Sergio Rossi and Puma are a mix that does not appeal to my classic style tastes. Perhaps that makes me boring or conventional, but who cares. These shoes are not worth the £375 price tag. Some of the other shoes in the capsule collection are pretty cool, just not these nasties.

Who agrees with me?

SHOES - Red Cartoon Wedges

These shoes have been around for ages and ages, but I still love them. I remember seeing some just like this in a shop window while in Spain. I regretted not buying them there and then as these are far more expensive. Sometimes footwear just needs to be fun, functional is a bonus of course, which is why this wedge heel makes them a safe bet.

Most quirky shoes are precarious to say the least, but these high wedged heels with a good ankle strap should keep you on your feet, rather than in a heap on your backside. They are limited edition though, and alas there are not many sizes left.

How amazingly 'Jessica Rabbit' is this dress! The shape epitomises old style, Hollywood glamour. No woman could look unfeminine in this gown with its tight fitted, curve hugging shape. I also love the colour, it is rich and opulent. Perfect in fact for your own mini BAFTAs. If you have a big event coming up then the price is not too bad either; a classic and elegant style that can be worn again and again.

SKINCARE - Comfort on Call by Clinique

Clinique has announced the launch of their latest advance in skin care moisturizer - New Comfort on Call.

Clinique's New Comfort on Call enhances the skin's ability to protect itself against external irritants such as pollutants and airborne particles. Containing the rare Citrus Jabara Fruit Extract, indigenous to Japan's Wakayama Prefecture region where it is cultivated, this moisturising cream helps to calm the appearance of irritated skin.

Protecting the skin, especially in colder climates, is critical in maintaining its strength and resilience. Skin becomes more susceptible to the harmful effects of common allergens and environmental pollutants, such as airborne particles, when the skin barrier is impaired.

New Comfort on Call will be available nationwide from 1 February 2009
