SHOPPING - Good and Bad at ASOS

I like this time of year; the retailers start unveiling their fashion gems for the Spring/Summer seasons. ASOS is always a store to watch and they are usually well ahead of the competition when it comes to trends. Here are 2 items... one good, one just plain ugly...

This pretty tiered skirt is perfect for the coming season. It fits into trends revealed on the catwalk that include sheers and chiffons. We had better start working on our legs girls, as the mini will be back as soon as the sunshine is. I love the black detail too as it makes it easy to team with black for a dressier, night time look.

These boots (if that is what you would call them) would look more at home on a pantomime cow than my feet. I don't want shoes that can't decide if they are sandals or boots, it just confuses people, and you end up with cold toes in winter and hot legs in summer. I couldn't care less if Rachel Bilson wore some... they looked stupid on her too. Rant over...

HATS - Beret Nice Too

I love berets and am lucky to be one of those people who can get away with wearing most styles of hat. Sequin berets are a great take on the classic and can be a really glamourous accessory. If you have something a little plainer don't worry though, just add some brooches to match your outfit for fashion perfection.

There are some great hats with felt flowers and other cute details like pom poms. If you want to be a bit edgier, switch brooches for badges. In this cold weather, anything that keeps my head warm is a welcome addition to my accessories hoard.

If yours seems to slip off your head, or doesn't sit quite right, just pin in place with some hair grips. Go for the subtle hair coloured ones if you want them to not be seen, or put on some bright and bold clips, if you want to stand out a bit.

ICON - The Next Big Things...

Tipped for the top by industry insiders, Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots, is geared up to take 2009 by storm. Already a hit with You Tubers thanks to her inventive bedroom broadcasts. Check out this Cyndi Lauper Hotel Room cover.

I made predictions about the futuristic look, and Little Boots is yet another female to adopt this trend. Surely it will trickle down to the high street soon and we will all be wearing bold lines and mad metallics.

SHOPPING - Visit Boots.com

As much as I love shopping, going to get the essentials on a Saturday afternoon can be more stress than it is worth. Online shopping gives you more time to yourself, instead of navigating parking lots and busy shopping centres. I love Boots.com because...

  • Free advice. Boots really is a one-stop-shop. Read up on the latest health news and advice at the website while you do your shopping.
  • Ask a Pharmacist. Between 8am and midnight, Monday to Saturday, you can ask your health queries and get answers from a professional.

GIFT - A Valentine's Day Massage

I am not a huge fan of gifts at Valentine's, crazy as that might sound. I think that rather than spend a lot of money, it is more important for couples to spend the time together. However this gift ticks both boxes, as by giving it you also promise to give the massage too. The Bullocks range is designed for men, so the oil has a masculine scent, nothing floral. Eucalyptus, clove and camphor combat tired muscles, aches and pains. If your other half is the sporty type, they will appreciate this even more.

This is tried and tested by me, and in fact, I use it all the time now. Not just in a romance sense, but also because it helps me to relax and unwind before bed. Dim the lights, get out the oil, and make time for each other. That is the best Valentine's advice I can give.

PRODUCT - Watch Your Step...

Ice, rain and silly shoes cause embarrassing accidents. Fashion footwear is not always the most practical, but more often than not the pretty pair wins us over and we then spend every wear, watching our step.

shoes heels hearts valentine
Enter Heartstoppers. These grippy pads stick to the bottom of your shoes or boots to stop slippage and avoid any nasty trips or falls. And even better than that, they look cool too if someone catches a glance. They may not have the same appeal as sexy lingerie, but they still fit the Valentine's theme.

American ladies can get hold of Grippy Steps. Recommended by Tara Swennen, stylist to the likes of Sarah Michelle Geller and Lyndsey Lohan. Red carpet A-listers often reach for some extra grip in their daredevil heels, and who can blame them.

Re-heeling shoes can cost a fair bit, so this is the cheaper option and we could all do with a cheaper option right now.

TIPS - Anti-aging Skincare

la prairie skincare beauty face creamPhoto Credit: gLiTTeRb☺i® on Flickr.com

Keeping a youthful complexion is mostly down to common sense, partly down to genetics and a little bit down to using the right products. If you live a healthy lifestyle, your chances of slowing down the aging process will be increased. So are you feeling like it is about time you started some preventative measures? Or perhaps you need to reverse the, already evident, effects? Check out the tips below for a push in the right direction...

Wear sunscreen
I like a tan as much as the rest of us, but skin on the face can be sensitive, and a moisturiser with sunscreen is a good idea. Once the summer comes, I benefit from wearing factor 30 on my face as burnt skin does significant and lasting damage. In fact, your whole body should be protected. Opt for a gradual tan moisturiser over sunbeds.

Water and Nutrients

Drinking lots of water is vital for good skin. Try and get your '5 a day' too as vitamins and anti-oxidants will keep you looking fresh. I take a Multibionta multivitamin every day, and if I am feeling run down I have an 'immune support' one.

Cleanse
Make sure you have time in your routine to properly cleanse and tone your skin. If you can, try and give yourself a quick facial massage as this can encourage collagen production. This helps to keep the elasticity of the skin, and therefore a youthful appearance.

Kick the Habit
Smoking is bad; sorry, but it is as simple as that. Not only does nicotine take away minerals and vitamins from the skin, but smoking will encourage wrinkles around the mouth. Even being in a smoky environment will have negative effects on your skin.

Don't Stress
Working too hard and not getting enough sleep all contribute to poor skin. Try and get an early night whenever you can and your skin will thank you.

Choosing a product

So what if your lifestyle choices haven't exactly been the right ones. Then you may have to look for some extra help... Here are a few ingredients to look for in an anti-aging cream?
  • Peptides - these are proteins that boost collagen
  • UVA and UVB sunscreen - to protect from harmful rays
  • Antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q10 or Idebenone - for skin repair
  • Anti-inflammatories such as chamomile or aloe - these are soothing
  • Resurfacers such as retinol - good for cell renewal
  • Vitamin C - boosts circulation
Which brands to choose...
  • Time Delay at Boots.com is a good budget option and smells divine.
  • Nivea and RoC develop advanced formulas with key ingredients for a fair price.
  • And if money is no object it has to be La Prairie.

Regardless of the cost of the product, don't expect results overnight. You need to be dedicated and use a product every day if you are going to see the effects and even then it might be tough to tell the difference. I personally would recommend a good moisturiser that does not irritate your skin and that suits your skin type.

Are there any alternative or natural products that anyone would recommend?

BAG - Eel Skin Clutch by Makki

This may not be the cheapest clutch bag you can get your hands on, but it is a pretty good investment piece. The bag is made from Eel's skin which is much softer than leather and around 3 times as strong. The texture is different too and quite distinctive. You might think that using eel skin could be cruel but don't panic just yet. The material is a by product of the food industry and eels are not killed for their skin. This may not satisfy the vegans among us, but eel skin bags are considered to be eco-friendly.

The bags are available in a range of colours. I love the teal, but after being featured in Vogue and Marie Claire it has sold out. Better hurry and get yours soon before they are all gone.

JEWELLERY - Ring-a-Ding

Whats the deal with wearing a ring on your index finger? Mary Kate Olsen and Kylie have both been photographed with their bling on the pointing finger. If you are giving it a try, go for something costumey with a big jewel or quirky detailing. I love something a little daring when it comes to a night out and with rings you really can have a bit of fun.

MUSIC - Lady GaGa's Awesome Album

lady gaga music fame celebrity style
Since Monday I have been playing Lady GaGa's album - The Fame - on repeat. Gaga hit the top spot in the UK last week with her track 'Just Dance' and the catchy beats have had many people hooked. The album was released this week and I just had to get myself a copy. Dirrty pop is my guilty pleasure. My favourite tracks have got to be 'Beautiful, Dirty, Rich' 'Disco Heaven' and 'Fame' although I might change my mind after some more listening.

Since Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera have both had children and Britney has gone, well... a little crazy, Lady Gaga is stepping into a gap in the pop music market. She is a mixture of Katy Perry and Gwen Stefani with a DJ Peaches twist. Visit DJ Peaches website (not for prudes).

Gaga is 'Changing the world one sequin at a time'. If you want to see more about Gaga's style, check out my earlier post - ICON - Gaga for Lady Gaga

If this is your genre of choice then why not revisit some other great albums like these below.

The 100% natural Face Mask is already a Cult product after appearing on How To Look Good Naked with Gok Wan. As both the celebs and skaters need to look their very best in front of the cameras, this mask would also prove invaluable to them all. SHOES - On a Shoestring

I love lace up shoes right now; especially for work wear. Most of these pairs are pretty sensible and will keep your feet dry in, what will probably be, a rainy spring. The flat lace up shoes (a la Agyness Deyn) are all the rage too, but I just find them too boyish and not very flattering. I would much rather add a couple of inches or two, then switch to my flats when no one is looking.

on a shoestring
on a shoestring by The Style PA

Lace up boots are a little more daring as going too far can be either fetish or 19th century. These below are a pretty cool pair of boots. I would wear them with tights, a chiffon layered skirt and a cropped leather jacket. A mix of textures that will take you through spring.

TIPS - How to Wear the Jumpsuit

Could it be that the trend we all thought might be a fashion fad, the jumpsuit, could become your next wardrobe classic. If the fashion mags are anything to go by the answer is yes, and many designers are putting them in the coming season's collections such as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and YSL.

Wearing a playsuit is a hard look to master. Firstly you should choose a style that suits your figure. There is no point going for lycra if you have a few lumps and bumps, but that is not to say there is not a playsuit that suits those above a size 6.

You should also not go for something too baggy as this can be as unflattering as something too tight. The romper style playsuits are good for one thing... toddlers. Don't even get me started on the harem pant playsuits. Think tailored or body skimming and you will be looking at a better investment that can be worn more than once and at various occasions.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Victoria Beckham both got it right in 2008 with their smart, black playsuits. A perfectly flattering style for the average gal to copy. Wear it with heels to lengthen your legs and elongate your silhouette.

Wear with a bright patent clutch for a modern, playful (but still grown up) edge. If you can't afford the designer versions, then Topshop has loads of playsuits in stock right now and many are on sale. Check them out.

GYPSY 05 not only stocks some great styles, it wants to make a difference in the world. "Good Planets Are Hard to Find" is the motto at the centre of Gypsy 05's ethos.

The one of a kind designs use organic fabrics, low impact dyes, and water based printing in every collection as part of a wider mission for environmental awareness. GYPSY 05 encourages us to 'Recycle, Reduce, Re-planet and feel confident' which is not a bad mantra in my opinion.

Denise Richards, Lauren Conrad and Hayden Panettierre are just a few of the celebrities who are loving Gypsy 05's dresses and other garments. Last summer, the fashion and gossip magazines were filled with stars in the block colour maxi dresses which have become a signature piece for the brand.

Here are some of my faves from the current collection...

Sometimes it is far too much effort to find something good to read yourself, so I have provided a list below to give you some inspiration. Thanks to Independent Fashion Bloggers. Happy reading...

Q&A - What is Mineral Make Up?

Reader asks: "I keep hearing about mineral make up and some of the big brands seem to be advertising it. I don't understand what the difference is; can you explain?"

The Style PA: Mineral make up is coloured by pigment from natural minerals that can be found in the earth such as zinc and titanium oxide. In theory it does not dry out the skin in the same way as other cosmetics can. It has also been shown to last longer on the skin but brands do vary and, as ever, you do get what you pay for. Mineral based powders are probably most common, but minerals are also being used for eyeshadows, lip colour and mascara too.

Here is what my fellow bloggers have to say about mineral make up:

Latest Beauty Secrets
" I use Bare Escentuals and afterglow mainly. I suffer from M.E. and have to be careful of the cosmetics I use because of drug interaction. They are lighter to wear with easy application.

Get Smart Women
" I really do love mineral makeup and use Bare Minerals. It works well for me. I Honestly wouldn't use anything else now. "

College Fashion

"
I love Bare Escentuals foundation - it covers everything, is good for your skin & looks totally natural."

BEAUTY - Lash Alive and Kicking

lashes eyes mascaraIt seems that a new lash invention comes out every week at the moment. Here is yet another.

The latest is lashALIVE™ Lash Enhancing Serum which has been selected for the 2009 Oscars goody bags. lashALIVE was recently launched in the UK by Aromatherapy Direct.

According to Eileen Mulligan, MD at Aromatherapy Direct ‘lashAlive produces fuller looking lashes in two weeks, and new re growth can be seen by week three'. Weather presenter Sian Lloyd has also tried lashAlive, and reportedly said ‘After three weeks my lashes are looking better than they have for years’.

So how does it work? Designed to be used twice a day, the formulation contains 19 Organic Essential Oils that are micro-blended with hair stimulating ingredients. Organic Lavendin helps to prevent hair loss, Biotinol Tripeptide-1, a vitamin peptide, promotes stronger hair and healthy growth and Organic Yarrow acts as a natural anti-bacterial.

At £79.00 a tube, I can't say I will be spending my hard earned cash on some, but I am sure the celebs will buy into it.

NEWS - Back Flips in Selfridges

Before the doors open to the sales shoppers tomorrow, staff at Selfridges will start the day with an energetic workout! Katie Cannon who was 5 times British Aerobics Gymnastics champion, is sure to put a spring in their step for the rest of the day.

Katie runs gymnastic workshops for kids called BackFlip Performers and is now about to give adults a chance to experience the Katie Cannon magic!

“Gymnastics is such a great way to keep fit – it improves co-ordination and confidence in kids and is a lot more fun for adults than pounding the treadmill”, says Katie.

Katie’s speciality is the BackFlip – the signature move for BackFlip Performers which she will perform across the stage. The staff at Selfridges will be unlikely to be able to perform a BackFlip yet, but Katie guarantees that most children given the right support will be able to do one themselves.

ICON - Very Katy Perry

Katy Perry has snuck up on the world of fashion and music and brought with her a quirky style to envy. The retro, fifties inspired looks she so effortlessly pulls off never cease to impress. Not everyone can pull off high waisted hot pants like Katy can, so just switch the hot pants for a high waisted pencil skirt which is much more flattering.

Accessories can give you a little bit of Katy Perry. Wear a flower in your hair, a waist belt and some retro shades and you will have channeled some key Katy style elements.

I think Katy has a style all her own, and a confidence that we should all aspire to. I am lucky enough to be going to see her perform in June next year and can't wait for the costume changes... (neither can my boyfriend actually!)

STYLE - My New Year's Eve Dress

new year sale dress stylePhoto copyright Jenny Hayden

I was lucky enough to find this pretty ruffle neck, polka dot dress, while shopping in the sales. It cost £19 from Jane Norman and was perfect for our party at home. Unfortunately the website has no more in stock, however polka dots never really go out of fashion. Dorothy Perkins now has a similar dress in stock in black and white. I love it. Would it be indulgent to buy that one too? I particularly like the ruffled shoulders.
