NO NO - Worst Trends of 2008

Lemondrop.com shares its Top 10 Worst Fashion Trends of 2008 shown below. There are always those trends that get adopted by so many people that we soon get fed up of them and these are no exception.

10. Bowler Hats
It takes a village (of blond starlets) to ruin a classic.

no no trend fashion police9. Uggs
The gateway boot. First, it's the Uggs, then comes the jungle juice. Next thing you know, you're knocked up with twins.
  • The Style PA says this has been one of the most searched items on my blog over the past year and I can't stand them either. Knitted Uggs are a No No.
8. Celeb Perfumes
Because we've never once wondered what it would be like to smell like Paris or Mariah, and we're not willing to pay them to find out.

7. Gladiator Sandals
Somehow, those weird Renaissance-festival people convinced trendy young things to sport their garb, it probably involved some sort of frog potion packaged as a delicate cream blush.
  • The Style PA says I love a bit of a gladiator sandal, but to the knee versions just cut up the calf like a strung up piece of pork. Not a good look.
6. Fannypacks
Things we love: Fannypak, the "America's Best Dance Crew" contestants.
Things we loathe: Fannypacks, the accessory. Since when is it cool to look like a foreign exchange student at Epcot Center?

5. Sunglasses at Night
Because the same guy that wear sunglasses to the club is the same guy that is pushing his demo in your face and hawking some new energy drink.

4. Crop Tops
No one wants to see your belly. And Heidi Montag, no one wants to see your gross husband Spencer either.

3. Leggings
Cameltoe doesn't look good on anyone. Trust us.

2. High-Waisted Jeans
How bad are these things? They make even gorgeous Mischa Barton look bad.
1. The Ubiquitous Scarf
Dear Lil Wayne, Kirsten and Pete, Please put the scarf down and walk away. And that goes for the rest of you, too.

FITNESS - Frugal Fitness Tips

According to Stacy Berman, a certified fitness trainer in New York, “the first thing people reach for when they are stressed out is comfort food. That would be fine if they were keeping up their healthy routine, but fitness is often swept under the rug when a person feels the pinch in their wallet.” Stacy believes you don’t have to break the bank to stay fit.

Stacy has devised five “frugal fitness tips” to help people stay healthy and within their budget...

Frugal Fitness Tip # 1: Strength in Numbers!

With so many consumers cutting back on spending, personal trainers and gyms are feeling the burn. Stacy recommends quitting your one-on-one training sessions in favor of a group discounted rate. “Many trainers will accept a larger group of people for a lower individual rate,” says Stacy, “it’s a great way to reduce spending on fitness but keep the motivation factor there.”

Frugal Fitness Tip #2: The Cheaper the Meat, the Bigger Your Waist

According to Stacy, many consumers will have to make sacrifices when it comes to consuming high-price items like meat. If you are a meat eater, Stacy warns you not to go overboard with cost cutting. “Often the cheapest cuts of meat are also the cuts with the highest fat content. You may be saving a dollar or two, but it could add up your calorie content higher than it used to be,” says Stacy. Instead, chose moderately priced lean cuts of meat and scale back on your side dishes.

Frugal Fitness Tip #3: Every Little Bit Counts

The world is your playground – literally! Stacy is a big fan of using everyday activities to burn extra calories. She runs her outdoor boot camp, Stacy’s Boot Camp, in the public parks of New York City, and her classes use no more than bodies and a few water bottles to garner outstanding results. “You don’t always need fancy gym equipment to get into great shape,” says Stacy, “just a set of dumbbells and a chair can get you to your fitness goals without breaking the bank.” According to Stacy, as the holiday season approaches, take advantage of calorie burning activities like raking leaves, building snowmen and ice skating!

Frugal Fitness Tip #4: Be Prepared to Prep!

The place where money is wasted the most is in the pre-packaged food aisles, says Stacy. “Spending extra money on things like pre-washed and pre-cut lettuce, for example, is a huge money pit,” says Stacy, “buying whole foods and preparing it yourself will not only cut back on costs but it will ensure you are not eating extra preservatives or additives in packaged foods.”

Frugal Fitness Tip #5: Use the “Value Menu” Wisely

Stacy admits there are times when you may have no choice but to eat at fast food restaurants. However, Stacy notes that many if not all fast food chains are offering not only healthy but appetizing options for those both on a diet and a budget. “When choosing to eat from a fast food restaurant, it’s simple to stay on the health track,” says Stacy, “I tell my clients to avoid the words ‘crisp,’ ‘double’ and ‘big’ at all costs.” There are some great choices to be had at many restaurant chains – including McDonalds Salads with Grilled Chicken and Burger King’s Whopper Jr. without cheese.

FRAGRANCE - Harajuku Hits London

perfume
I am loving Gwen Stefani's latest fragrance offering. Harajuku Lovers is a range of five beautiful fragrances presented as miniature Japanese dolls named Love, Lil Angel, Music, Baby and G. The new Harajuku range not only represents Gwen's backing dancers, but her unique style too and is the latest addition to a growing fashion and fragrance portfolio for the singer.

All the fragrances are floral in scent with undertones of Creamy Vanilla Orchid, Pineapple, Sparkling Pear, Orange Flower, or Fresh Coconut and are inspired by the electric street scene of the Harajuku shopping district in Tokyo.

perfume

I tested the 'Music' eau de toilette which was delicately sweet and delicious with hints of vanilla and pear. The aroma is not overpoweringly sweet though and subtle enough to be worn every day. These are also likely to be a hit with teens who will appreciate the undeniably cute bottles and fresh floral fragrances.

perfume

The Harajuku Lovers dolls are now available exclusively from World Duty Free stores until February 2009 priced at £16.00 which I think is really reasonable. Cheap enough, in fact, to collect the whole set. So if you are travelling by plane soon you will be able to get ahead of the crowd, and if not then find a friend who is to snap them up for you.

Visit the World Duty Free website for more info on where to buy.

STYLE - Flickr Ladies Love the Seventies

Over on Flickr there are a loads of stylish people who post images of their outfits and I take real inspiration from them. After all, the designers take inspiration from the streets for their collections. As well as influencing us, we influence them. The wardrobe remixer's seventies style has caught my eye recently. Warm autumnal hues and layering make this a perfect look for winter weather.

seventies fashion stylePhoto Credit: No Signposts on Flickr.com

Most of the items for this outfit are from H&M, with the jacket being a Diesel number. I love the comfy boots, but am certain that my thighs would not work with those tights.

seventies fashion stylePhoto Credit: StrawberryKitten on Flickr.com

The shoes boots here are bang on trend and the cute Zara dress goes so well with those tights. Layering is always a good way to get an extra season out of a dress.

Great tan boots and note the statement necklace. Big jewellery is still a key look, and will continue to be through to spring.

An orange giraffe print dress makes this remixer stand out from the crowd. Look out for vintage pieces that will not be worn by every other gal on the street.

TIPS - Contact Lens and Eye Care

Image: copyright Jenny Hayden

I found out this week that I now have the all clear to wear contact lenses again. It has been over 3 months since I got an ulcer and had to stop wearing my lenses. My eye now has a permanent scar, but I was lucky; it could have been a lot worse. Your sight is precious and something to be looked after.

I think it is easy to take contact lenses for granted and forget that you really should take great care when wearing them, especially for prolonged periods of time. Here are some reminders...
  • Always visit your optician for regular check ups. They can spot problems that may have no symptoms.
  • Avoid long, sharp finger nails as these can damage both the lens and your eye when inserting and removing the lenses.
  • Don't keep wearing a lens that is scratched or damaged. It can scratch your eye.
  • Avoid inserting lenses after applying your make up.
  • Make sure hair spray and other aerosols don't come into contact with your lenses.
  • Give you eyes regular breaks from lenses by wearing your glasses.
If you are currently wearing monthly disposables why not consider daily lenses. They are much kinder to your eyes as they are thinner and do not collect the dirt and bacteria of monthly lenses as they are thrown away after one use. I was told that coloured lenses are the most likely to cause ulcers. I will avoid these in future, or if I do wear them, it will be for a short period of time only.

If you don't wear lenses, you still need to take care of your eyes...
  • Visit your optician every 2 years even if you don't think your eyes have deteriorated. In addition to a sight test they can evaluate the health of the eye, and even determine more serious health problems.
  • Eye strain can cause headaches and anyone working in front of a computer screen for long periods of time should take care of their eyes. Type in a larger font and take regular screen breaks if you suffer from tired eyes.
  • Wear sunglasses, not only to protect your eyes and sight, but to avoid unnecessary wrinkles caused by squinting. I find them essential when driving as the eyes are having to concentrate quite hard.
  • Keep blinking to keep your eyes moisturised. Use eye drops if it helps but remember that they only stay in date for around 1 month and using them after this time may do more harm than good.
  • Give your eyes a rest from make-up. Choose one day a week to ditch the mascara and eyeliner. Healthy eyes and eyelashes are not constantly caked in products.

WEBSITE - Catwalk to Closet

I love a good bargain and Catwalk to Closet is full of them. Just for signing up to the site, I got a pair of Bruce Oldfield sunglasses for just £10 instead of £120 - now that is a good deal. If you click the link below you could too (while the promotion lasts).

Catwalktocloset.com is an online designer sample sale company. They ship globally and feature limited edition and exclusives from Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli to name but a few. I genuinely went on there and got my sunnies purely because the offer really was a good one. The sunglasses arrived last weekend, and now that is one less thing I have to buy in the spring.

NEWS - Feeling the Pinch? Try This...

With the credit crunch continuing to bite, would-be models are turning to alternative ways of making money by renting out their eyelids as advertising space. Feel Unique the online beauty boutique, is offering people the chance to earn 10 pence per wink in return for displaying the company’s logo on their eyelid space.

People who sign up to star in the campaign will have the Feel Unique logo temporarily transferred onto their right or left eyelid and will be paid on a Pay Per Wink (PPW) basis – up to a total of £100 per model.

So would you sell your eyelid space? I am not sure how visible you can really make the advertising as you need to be in pretty close contact with lots of people. Visit www.feelunique.com for more information.

WANTED - On My Grey-dar

Others may call grey a boring choice, but I think the colour can be really versatile. Here are a few grey items that have caught my attention whilst browsing online of late. At least they match the weather! Does anyone else share my love of all things grey?

Maxi dresses are not that great on me; I am too short. On the right person though, this dress would look fabulous. I love the simple styling and the delicate detailing on the neckline and back.

This dress from Dorothy Perkins would work for the office or a night out. I would team it with patent black shoe boots and a statement necklace. It is a really flattering shape too, drawing the waist in and enhancing that hourglass shape.

Knit wear is a must at this time of year and this grey drape cardigan just looks so comfortable. It can be worn tied or loose and could be worn over a little black dress to add a casual element.

TREND - Love Lame for a Party

Love Lame by The Style PA

If you are usually a plain dresser, now is the time to add some sparkle to your outfit. Gold and silver instantly lift an outfit to that party level and whether you want to go for full on glamour with a dress like the one shown above, or prefer to play it safe, there is a metallic option for you.

If comfort is a big priority, go for a gold blouse. Not too tight, so you leave some room for the buffet. Team with satin skinnies like those shown above as these are dressy but without being too much of a statement. Opt for some matching shoes with a sensible heel and you will be able to dance the night away in your party ensemble. Keep jewellery simple. A few bangles, a cocktail ring and some stud earrings will do nicely.

If glamour is the priority then it will have to be a dress, and the bejewelled silver number above is a striking frock for a party. Skyscraper, jewel heels are a must and a beaded handbag will finish the look. Add some shimmering moisturiser to your collar bones and shoulders and prepare to out-dazzle the other revellers. You won't need much jewellery. I would stick with some vintage chandelier earrings and avoid a necklace.

CHARITY - Celeb Ambassadors for Hear the World

celebrities hear the world
Mischa Barton, Billy Idol and Maggie Gyllenhaal are the latest celebrities to be photographed by musician Bryan Adams for the Hear the World campaign, an initiative set up to raise awareness about the issue of hearing loss.

As official photographer for the campaign, Mr. Adams has photographed a number of celebrities including Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Amy Winehouse, Dionne Warwick, Joss Stone and Annie Lennox. Each individual is captured holding the Hear the World pose, with a hand behind one ear, symbolising conscious hearing.

celebrities hear the world

While hearing loss is one of the world’s most preventable disabilities, it is also one of the most common. 500 million people worldwide, more than 10 percent of the world’s population have a hearing loss and the number is expected to increase to 700 million by the year 2015.

Hear the World is a non profit initiative launched by hearing device manufacturer Phonak in 2006. The campaign educates the public about the importance of protecting their hearing, the social and emotional implications of hearing loss and the available solutions for those with hearing loss.

You can order a free copy or subscribe to Hear the World magazine by visiting www.hear-the-world.com. Net proceeds of the magazine benefit the Hear the World Foundation that supports charitable organisations and projects focused on helping people with hearing loss.

STYLE - Biker Trend to Suit Your Budget

Biker by The Style PA

The Biker look is worn by the most stylish ladies around. Think Kate Moss, Fearne Cotton and Alexa Chung. These ladies know how to dress to impress and this look does just that. A leather jacket is a must have item this winter, and it will see you through spring and into next autumn too. The good news is, that this garment usually manages to fit into at least one trend each season, so you will get a good cost-per-wear from it.

Check the high street out as some stores do real leather at unbelievable prices. Take New Look for example. They always have at least a couple of good, soft leather jackets in stock and these are usually not more than £70. I have added my favourite jackets from their current leather range below...

If that is still too expensive then get yourself a good fake. Primark has some great brown jackets starting from about £14. Shiny, plastic looking, fake leather is a dead give away. The trick is to go for something almost matt. Throw on a chic scarf and no one will ever notice.

BEAUTY - The Now Brow

hair salon style
From Vivian Westwood to Celine to Fendi, it seemed that all the designers at the A/W 08 shows were in agreement on one particular trend - The ‘Now Brow’. Fuller and more face framing than ever before, the concept remained the same for each look, but each designer had their own take on this brow statement.

Zoe Irwin of Hari's Salon comments, “Many women struggle with their brows and I’ve noticed that tinting along with threading is a great way to bring out eye colour and enhance the brow shape. My team have been experimenting with different tints to come up with our fabulous ‘Now Brow’ formula which works with the hairs natural tones for a cooler modern brow - conventional tinting can sometimes create a shiny golden hue which looks quite fake.”

Check out Hari's Salon for more on this brow service which is priced from £45.

TREND - Gloved Up

I adore leather gloves. The fit, the fact that they are warm, and practical too. In the winter it is nice to be able to grip my steering wheel with gloved hands, to stop my fingers from getting too cold. Lets be honest, at 7am, in December, in Britain... gloves are a necessity.

Bright colours can lift an otherwise dark outfit and there are loads of hues to choose from, just visit any high street store, or website. There are also a lot of shorter sleeved coats and jackets this winter so opt for gloves that come further up the arm as they will not only keep you warmer, but they are much sexier too. This is a look that has been favoured by celebrities for the past couple of months.

There are bargains to be had over at ASOS too, check out their glove compartment!

Penny Callaghan from LoveItHaveIt says 'patent and metallic gloves are right on trend and selling fast, together with the brightly coloured ones, our hot pink or lime green driver gloves give an instant lift to an outfit – especially on a cold grey day.”
