DRESS - Looking Glass Lovely

looking glass dressLizzie - Looking Glass - £108

I just adore this checked, pleated collar dress from Looking Glass. A classic and timeless design with a quirky edge that makes it both individual and desirable. The lace details are really pretty and the belted waist is sure to flatter most figures. I guess the only thing left to do is write it on my list to Santa and hope he drops it down my chimney!

WEBSITE - Discover a World of Fragrance

world duty free fragrance perfume
Roja Dove, the world’s only Professeur de Pafurms, knows a thing or two about fragrance, and has launched a new website in conjunction with travel retailer, World Duty Free. The idea is simple, www.discoverfragrance.co.uk promises to find you the perfect fragrance to suit you, and your destination.

Simply input where you are going in the world and whether you are travelling for business, romance or simply pleasure and you’ll receive a Roja recommendation of a selection of fragrances that will be the perfect accompaniment for your trip.

Just as your travel wardrobe should differ for a business trip to New York as it would for a romantic break in Paris, your fragrance choice can differ too - and according to Roja this is where most of us miss a trick. Just as you wouldn’t pack a little black dress for board room meetings in New York or a business suit for a beach break in Sydney, Roja advises you to apply the same thinking to your fragrance to help you effortlessly blend in.

Roja Dove began his career with the renowned French fragrance house Guerlain and has since gone on to launch his own perfumery, The Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie at Harrods. Roja reveals,

“I have travelled the world with my work and I am constantly surprised about how many people choose the wrong fragrance for themselves. To ensure success, the key is to be as savvy about your choice of fragrance as you would about everything else you would choose to put in your suitcase. “

GOSSIP - Alexa Chung for New Look?

celebrity fashion new look

Handbag.com always seem to be first for fashion gossip, and they may have given us a heads up again. Here they reveal what might be about to happen in the New Look camp...

Handbag.com says - At the British Fashion Awards on Tuesday night style icon du jour Alexa Chung was seated at the New Look table. Rumours have been circulating that the high street giants were on the look out for another celebrity name to add to their stable of designers following the huge success of their collaborations with Lily Allen and Kelly Brook - and by the looks of things they have found their girl.

New Look are keeping tight lipped on the matter refusing to either confirm or deny that Alexa will be joining the team, but as Gordon Ramsey has shown us this week, not confirming or denying a rumour is as good as admitting it's true. Let's hope so anyway. If Alexa's personal style and fashion connections are anything to go by it would be a guaranteed sell-out.

TIPS - Long Live Your Lashes

eye lashes mascara tips beautyPhoto Credit: bettina n on Flickr

A flutter of the eyelashes can get a girl places, but only if the lashes are long and luscious of course. They need as much looking after as any other part of your appearance. Here is how to make sure you don't neglect those peepers!
  • Eyelash curlers make a big difference. For maximum effect, squeeze and release the curlers at least 3 times on your eyelashes in different places. This will give you the maximum curl and open the eyes right up. Don't use curlers after you have applied mascara as this breaks and damages the lashes.
  • When applying mascara, wiggle the brush from side to side as you sweep upwards. This gives width to lashes. If length is what you are after, apply mascara several times to just the tips of the lashes.
  • Have a day off from mascara each week. You can use Vaseline on this day which will condition the lashes and keep them in good nick. You condition your hair after all, why should your eyelashes be any different.
  • Avoid false eyelashes if possible. The glue can actually pull lashes out and you will end up with shorter, thinner eyelashes. Concentrate on what you were born with and enhance using mascara rather than falsies.
  • If your eyelashes are fair then eyelash tinting is an option. Don't do it yourself unless you know what you are doing. A trustworthy salon will do a much better job for you.
  • Don't pick at dried mascara on your lashes. Use a good make up remover and cotton wool, and be gentle as you wipe the mascara off. Never pull the lashes away from the face as you remove mascara, as you will definitely lose a few.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with colour. Try a colour mascara on the tips of your lashes for a party look, or apply a little bit of glitter for eyes that really sparkle!

GADGET - Keeping Cosmetics Cool

beauty gadget technology styleYou may already know that cosmetics last longer if kept in the fridge. In fact many of the items in your make up bag have a shorter life than you might think, with mascara going off after about 6 months. Unfortunately it is not convenient to keep all your kit in the fridge downstairs and that is why Japanese company IDOCI have come up with a mini fridge designed especially for your cosmetics, beauty products and fragrances.

Hallyu Tech report that the fridge 'allows you to store all your cosmetics at the ideal 8 - 12 degree Celsius range. The appliance also features movable shelves, noise reduction features, and an interior light. The elaborate control system on the front allows you to set up a calendar, timers, and control the temperature'.

Great stuff. Now all I need to work out is where I am going to put it?

BARGAIN - Catwalk Copy Cape

I spotted in the window of Jaegar recently, a really stylish Cape Coat. I was determined to find a cheaper alternative and here it is. Dorothy Perkins have a cape coat very similar in style to the more expensive version. The cape was featured on the runways at London Fashion Week and is a smart and stylish option for winter. Just wear a fine knit, long sleeved jumper underneath, with long, leather gloves. Skinny jeans and knee high boots complete the look pretty effortlessly.

Let me know if you see something on the catwalk that you can't afford. I will browse the web for a more affordable copy for you.

STYLE - Top 10 Fashionable Faces to Watch

Handbag.com have compiled a list of some fashionable faces on the up in the style world. Look to these for a heads up on trends and brands. Do you agree with the selection of young starlets? anyone they have missed?

fashionable celebrities

Abbie Cornish

Handbag.com say - A huge star in Australia, the 26-year-old veggie, who grew up on a 170-acre farm in the wine region of Hunter Valley, beat off competition from Kiera Knightley to land the part of Catherine Earnshaw in John Maybury's epic film version of Wuthering Heights when Natalie Portman pulled out to make Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium 2. We predict Portman may regret this in the not too distant future.

fashionable celebritiesKaty Perry

Handbag.com say - the kooky Californian with a fascination for cherry chapstick has quickly infiltrated the fashion scene and pushed poor little Kylie sideways to become bessie mates with those gorgeous Dolce Gabbana boys. KP (who changed her real name, Kate Hudson, for obvious reasons), air-punched her way through her catchy songs at the D&G show wearing a transparent leopard-print D&G baby-doll dress, before changing into a skimpy sequined shift (which for once didn't show her knickers) for the after-show party. Such fun!

DRINK - Glacéau Vitaminwater...How Refreshing!

Do you spend all day rushing around only to fall in a heap by dinner time? Perhaps you need a way to refuel and fill your body with the nutrients it needs to function properly.

Glacéau Vitaminwater is an active lifestyle drink from New York and you can now get it here in the UK. There are 6 flavours to try, each made with spring water and a combination of vitamins to give you a boost when you need it most.

Naturally, I decided it was best to put them to the test and report my findings to The Style PA readers.

Power-C - dragonfruit (c+b's)
This was the panel's definite favourite. A great flavour that just makes you want to drink more and more. The vitamins are an added bonus to help you feel a bit more 'on the ball'.

Essential - orange-orange (c+calcium)
This is great as an alernative to your usual breakfast drink to help kick start your day. The orange is subtle but pleasant enough. Smokers will benefit from the hit of vitamin c to replace lost nutrients.

Spark - tropical citrus (b+guarana)
My tester loved this flavour, as it is really fresh and zingy. This one has natural caffeine and guarana so would suit a gym goer who needs some fuel for a good workout.

Multi-V - lemonade (b+zinc)
The lemonade vitamin water was pretty subtle, so if you are not much a a fruit fan then this is the one for you. It also has various vitamins in so is a good all round drink to pep you up.

Revive - fruit punch (b+potassium)
A really tasty and refreshing flavour perfect for a morning or lunchtime pick me up. A great alternative to a glass of 'nutrient empty' squash

Defence - raspberry-apple (c+zinc)
Feeling under the weather? This one is perfect for you. Essential vitamin c packed in a comforting apple and raspberry drink. Forget Lucozade and get some nutrients and the water that your body requires to help flush out those nasties.

The drinks are best enjoyed straight from the fridge, or in a glass with ice. Remember though that these are designed to give you a boost so watch the sugar content. One bottle a day should be all you need to get a body and mind boost. Swap you calorific soft drinks and energy drinks for a Vitaminwater and feel the benefit. Even 50 Cent is grabbing a piece of the action (watch the advert below)

CELEBRITIES - Gucci and UNICEF Unite

On November 19th, Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini and Grammy winning artist Rihanna lit the UNICEF Snowflake in New York City, At 23 feet in diameter, over 28 feet in height and weighing 3,300 pounds, the UNICEF Snowflake is the largest outdoor chandelier of its kind. It’s adorned with 16,000 Baccarat crystal prisms and has become an iconic fixture during the holiday season as a reminder of UNICEF’s commitment to do whatever it takes to save a child.

Following the lighting there was a cocktail party in the Gucci Fifth Avenue flagship store to celebrate the launch of the tattoo heart bag collection to Benefit UNICEF. Check out what the ladies were wearing as they sauntered down the red carpet...

Rihanna went for a little red number, teamed with tights (I don't blame her!) with Mary J Blige choosing to coordinate her look with the scenery and Gucci's accent colour, bronze.

Blake Lively looked stunning in a simple black and white ensemble, while Madonna turned up in an outfit that seemed to be inspired by Sesame Street and Peter Pan. Just plain wrong in my opinion, and far too much makeup too.

Supermodel Erin Wasson had trouble filling out even the skinniest of patent trousers and Frida Giannini dazzled in a chic, black, sequin dress.

TIPS - Run it Right Marathon Tricks

running a marathonPhoto Credit: archivalproject on Flickr.com

Anyone thinking of running a spring marathon has probably already started training hard, but are you doing things right?

NYC podiatrist Dr. Johanna Youner is one of the premier cosmetic foot surgeons in the country. She leads the well-known practice, Park Avenue Podiatric Associates. Here are her tips to keep feet in tip-top shape and for feeling like a champion at the finish line:
  • Stretching – Stretching primes the body for strenuous activity so be sure to stretch before and after running, paying special attention to the calves, hamstrings, quads and feet
  • Shoes – Invest in a good pair of running shoes as they provide the specific impact support that running demands; if feet sweat heavily try putting talcum powder in your shoes to keep feet dry
  • Orthodics – If you have arch or heel pain, you may be a perfect candidate for orthodics, which are now widely available in over-the-counter varieties; visit your doctor to learn what option is best for you
  • Socks – Cotton socks absorb moisture and what you don’t want during the marathon are wet socks; opt instead for a synthetic sock (containing acrylic) to help keep moisture from your skin thus reducing the likelihood of a fungal growth. Another secret of the pros is to avoid situating the seams in a place where the shoe is tight – the pressure can force the seam to dig into the skin causing pain and blistering
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications – Do not preemptively pop Advil to prevent aches that may arise during the race; pain is a valuable indicator during high-impact events and taking anti-inflammatory medications will mask any red flags the foot sends up during the race
  • Groom Toenails – Make sure your toenails are trimmed to no longer than the tip of toes before the race to avoid a painful ingrown toenail or even a fungal nail
  • Blisters – Blisters result from excessive friction between shoes and feet so take preventative steps by making sure shoes fit properly and are laced up to fit snugly; if you are prone to blisters, apply Vaseline to problem areas prior to your run or try padded “blister proof” socks like those made by Thorlo. Dr. Youner also suggests applying moleskin to problem areas also prevents blisters from forming
  • Finish Line – When the race is complete, Dr. Youner prescribes RICE: Rest your feet, Ice feet to keep inflammation and swelling down, Compress with ACE wraps to reduce swelling and Elevate feet to help them rest up for the next big run.

JEWELLERY - Poison Apple Robot Earrings

I just love these cute earrings. The retro style is quirky and fun and they remind me of Ironman (which I happen to think is a great film) They are actually replicas of a robot that featured in a 1979 Disney film. They sit alongside brass lightning bolts and are attached to gold plated earwires, to care for even sensitive ears.

Why not check out the other great items in the Poison Apple collection.

PARTY - Get Lippy Website Re-Launch

celebrity party website launchThe Benefit Ladies with BB's Dale and Stuart

I went off to the launch party last night, for the re-vamped GetLippy.com website, the online face of Company Magazine. Cosmos were served in a trendy club in London with a light up, glass dance floor. I took along a pal to scout out some celebs and check out what all the lovely ladies were wearing. Outfit of the evening had to be the brunette in a green, short belted dress, with a tiny black leather jacket. I love that look! There were also a couple of black sequin dresses, and stirrup tights on more than one person. I am still not sure about those!

Stuart and Dale from this year's Big Brother were having fun mingling with the ladies and Stuart seemed particularly impressed with the benefit cosmetics that were out for guests to try. I love the thrrrob face powderwhich just so happened to be a gift in everyone's goodie bags.

HAIR - New Anti-Aging Range for Hair

Healthy hair changes over time due to a combination of everyday stresses and strains and our body’s natural ageing process. Charles Worthington explains, '"Haircare is an integral part of every woman’s daily beauty regime and it’s with this in mind that I developed the Charles Worthington Time Defy range. As we get older, we invest in the right products for our face so why not for our hair? "

hair care anti aging
Just as skin loses its ability to regenerate over time, the hair’s natural defence system is also affected with age, leaving hair more vulnerable to UV damage. From your thirties, your hair starts to change. Gradually the scalp becomes drier as sebum production decreases, hair diameter reduces, leaving it with less body and bounce. Hair begins to lose its natural colour, leaving greying hair which can become dry and coarse and prone to damage.

The Nourish and Protect formula of Charles Worthington Time Defy haircare combines fortifying ingredients such mineral rich seaweed and sunflower extract – a powerful free-radical neutralizer.

Designed to enhance and protect your hair’s natural radiance, early tests have shown that using the Time Defy regime increases protection against age-accelerating free-radicals alone by up to 61%. It smells good too with a fragrance of jasmine and freesia blended with crushed apple, a touch of watermelon and a hint of blackcurrant.

The range includes:

  • Moisture Renew Shampoo and Conditioner
  • Protein Fortifying Masque
  • Heat Defence Styling Spray
Available at Boots and other good chemists.

JEWELLERY - Be a Pearly Queen

Don some pearls in time for Spring 09 as all those in the know certainly will be. Luella and Roberto Cavalli featured pearls on the catwalk and you just know that this accessory will filter down to the masses in no time at all. You can either invest in a timeless classic item of jewellery by spending a fair amount, or go for costume jewellery which you can discard when the trends move on.

Team them with lace, tweed and bows to complete the look. It is time to be a proper lady. Vogue even suggests we should wear them in an unruly, tangled cluster. In fact, the more pearls the merrier! I have included some suggestions below to suit all budgets...
